On 15th January 2009, members of Angling For Youth Development are representing their organisation at the Kenmore Salmon Opening Celebrations on the River Tay in Perthshire. The event which raises money for charitable angling purposes is donating the proceeds of the day to AFYD.
Over a dozen teenagers from East Perthshire, Angus and Renfrew, accompanied by their instructors will be participating in the opening celebrations and hoping to promote the work of AFYD and the sport in general. At 0945 hours these young people from around Scotland are receiving from the event organisers a cheque for over £2000 to go towards AFYD’s funds.
AFYD’s youngest trainee coach, Linzi Johnstone, 17 years, will be casting the first fly onto the river from the boat. Linzi, who is a sixth year pupil at Blairgowrie High School, is the youngest lady angler to be afforded this honour.
The youngsters are to be joined by a number of their supporters who include amongst there number the President of the Scottish Angler’s National Association – Ronnie Pickens, representatives of Tayside Police, Tayside Fire & Rescue, Perth and Kinross and Renfrew Council, and staff from Blairgowrie High School where the AFYD modular angling courses are being piloted.
AFYD are running a Tombolla throughout the day that has a wonderful selection of angling related prizes .
Angling For Youth Development is a charity which provides angling education programmes free of charge to young people in Scotland. They would be delighted to meet on the day anyone interested in becoming involved with AFYD, or wishing to set up an AFYD programme.
