Anglers Descend On The Banffshire Coast For The Catch Of The Day

Next week (11th February) sees the start of the ever popular salmon fishing season on the River Deveron. Anglers from all over the world will visit the picturesque Banffshire Coast to fish on the river and catch their first spring salmon of the season.

Salmon fishing season in Scotland starts in early February until late October but coarse fishing and sea fishing are permitted all year round. The Banffshire Coast is a haven for fishing with good freshwater fishing in the lower beats of the river Deveron for brown trout, sea trout and salmon plus excellent sea fishing either from the shore or by boat for many varieties such as mackerel, pollock and wrasse.

The river Deveron is one of the top five British salmon rivers and it boasts a catchment area of 1260km². The spectacular scenery lends itself to a truly Scottish fishing experience.

Karen Crowe, of the Banffshire Coast Tourism Partnership says, “Last year was an excellent season for fishing on the River Deveron with an estimated 3000 salmon caught.  The River Deveron is a popular spot for fishermen of all abilities, as the river is split into three main sections the upper, the middle and the lower, with the upper being the more challenging part of the three.

“Salmon fishing is economically important nationally and locally.  Figures show that annual expenditure on salmon and sea trout fishing increased by over 40% over a five year period in Scotland.” 

Karen continues, “We look forward to inviting anglers and fishermen from all over the world during the fishing season, which runs from February to October. There is no national rod licence required in Scotland as there is in England and permits for most of the river systems can be obtained from a variety of local sources such as tackle shops or hotels.”
