NOSTALGIC FISHING BOOK PUBLISHED

A new book that will prove compelling reading for anyone who enjoys fishing in the lochs of Cumbria and the Scottish Highlands is about to be published.

Fishing with Father is the nostalgic and heart-warming account of Bruce Cawthra’s fishing holidays with his father, George. Caroline Metcalfe-Gibson’s beautiful illustrations, a collection of photographs and the author’s impressive ability to recreate the atmosphere of each moment give the reader an intimate insight into his experiences.

George started fishing when he was aged just ten. It would be a passion that would influence his life for the next seventy years. As a young boy, George’s son Bruce would be sent to check on the state of the River Eden at Kirkby Stephen, Cumbria, whilst his father was at work. It was in that river that George caught his first salmon, later to be displayed in the bank where he worked and to be admired by the customers.

The family would spend their holidays in the Scottish Highlands. The pair became close companions during the last ten years of George’s life, whilst fishing in lochs such as Ben Armine Lodge, Kinlochbervie, Gairloch, Scourie, Stack and More. When George died one month before his 80th birthday, he left one ambition unfulfilled • to catch a salmon on a Scottish loch.

Bruce Cawthra has published this nostalgic collection of reminiscences from their fishing holidays together as a tribute to his father, and hopes that people who share his passion for fishing in the lochs of Northern England and Scotland, especially with his or her father, will find this an compassionate and evocative read.
