Gravel stolen from river

The Environment Agency is urging people to come forward with information about the theft of gravel from riverbeds, after a beauty spot on a tributary of the River Lune was targeted twice in a month.

Greystone Gill, on the River Wenning, near Bentham, has been highlighted by the agency as a hotspot for illegal gravel removal, which can spark major ecological damage to the river.

Permission is needed to remove gravel from watercourses but many people are either unaware of this or do not bother to apply.

An EA spokeswoman said that, on two occasions over the last month, gravel, which is used for building foundations and garden drives, had been taken from the bed of Greystone Gill.
