Wicklow. Organised by the Irish Times, Annamoe Fishery and the Eastern Regional Fisheries Board, the event has proved extremely popular over the years and now attracts the top angling broadcast and print media from Ireland and the UK. 16 anglers from a variety of broadcast and print media took part in the competition on the scenic fly fishing lake in Annamoe Fishery including Derek Davis and Fergal Keane from RTE; Dick Warner from the Irish Examiner; Paddy O’Flaherty from BBC Radio Ulster; Michael Flanagan from the Sunday World; Gillian Mills from Inshore Ireland and Ceri Jones from Trout Fisherman to name but a few. 49 hard fighting rainbow trout were caught, recorded and released during the competition. A minnow was also caught by newcomer Gillian Mills but unfortunately that couldn’t be counted! It was a very close contest again this year with the top two teams, Trout Fisherman and the Irish Times recording 10 fish each. However, once the total points were added up, it was the Trout Fisherman team of Welsh angler Ceri Jones and Julie Gerry that won out with a total of 465 points. Ceri and Julie were presented with the beautiful perpetual Waterford Crystal trophy sponsored by Failte Ireland. Ceri continued his winning streak and also took home a beautiful mounted display of trout flies tied by Jimmy Tyrell of Irish Fly Craft and sponsored by Irish Countryman’s Weekly for catching the largest fish (53cm) and a weekend away at the Glendalough Hotel for catching the tagged fish. Ceri is a regular visitor to Ireland and usually goes fishing out West and in the Southwest but this was his first experience of fishing on the East. In order to show Ceri the fantastic wild brown trout fishing available in the region, the Eastern Regional Fisheries Board in conjunction with Failte Ireland organised for Ceri to fish on the Saturday and Sunday with top angling guide John Higgins on the River Liffey in Newbridge, Co Kildare. The weather on Saturday should have made conditions difficult but under John’s guidance, Ceri still managed to catch 13 good sized trout on the Saturday and 12 on the Sunday. Ceri enjoyed the fishing in Kildare so much that he didn’t even stop to watch Wales beat France in the Grand Slam and he has already booked to return in April to continue fishing with John! Second and third place winners, Derek Evans and Denis Coghlan (Irish Times) and Philip Lawton and David Wilkinson (Irish Countryman’s Weekly) also took home Waterford Crystal prizes. Derek Evans was also presented with the prize of a top quality Shimano rod, sponsored by the Eastern Regional Fisheries Board for the second largest fish of 52cm. There was a fantastic array of prizes on offer at the ceremony in the Glendalough Hotel and the organisers, Derek Evans of the Irish Times and Brian Nally of Annamoe both thanked all the sponsors, particularly, Failte Ireland for providing the beautiful Waterford Crystal prizes as well as the co-sponsors Irish Game Fairs Ltd, the Glendalough Hotel and Irish Countryman’s Weekly. Brian Nally of Annamoe Trout Fishery announced that he has decided to retire and he will be selling the fishery shortly. Brian has worked in Fisheries for the last 30 years and since taking over Annamoe, he has transformed it into one of the best fly-fisheries in Ireland. As well as looking after domestic and international anglers, hosting winter leagues and competitions etc; Brian has also contributed a great deal to the local community employing generations of young people from the Wicklow area. He was a pleasure to work with and a true gentleman and we wish him all the very best in his retirement. RESULTS OF COMPETITION PLACE TEAM NAMES NO. FISH CAUGHT NO. Cork OPEN DAYS SUCCESS AT BALLYHASS LAKES Despite the heavy rain and strong winds last weekend at Ballyhass Lakes Cecilstown Mallow, a large number of anglers came and braved the conditions. They were not disappointed as top Irish and British fly fishing experts came to demonstrate their skills and provide one to one instruction. Each participant was given a welcome pack from the Irish Angler Magazine and the Donegal Fly Fishing Company. Local instructor Michael Drinan (Rathcormac) took the fly tying classes and demonstrated these results on the Kanturk River. Glenda Powell (Blackwater Lodge) demonstrated the double handed cast as well as correcting many bad habits much to surprise of some anglers. British instructors Malcolm Cocliff, Robbie Winram and Jim Fern gave many one to one instructions while conducting clinics offering practical and technical advice to all. There was a huge interest in the boat competition on both days as two youngsters stood out from the other competitors. The competition on Saturday was won by Michael Swift (15 yrs), Williamstown Galway. Sunday’s competition was won by Shane Bird (16 yrs) Togher Cork. Both have very good prospects and hopefully might represent Ireland in the near future. The prize on both days was sponsored by Donegal Fly Fishing Company. A box of 100 trout flies was given to both winners. The draw competition on Saturday was won by Donie O’Sullivan Lombardstown Co Cork and Sunday’s draw competition was won by Paul Barrett Glanmire Cork. A free day catch and release and boat hire at Ballyhass Lakes was represented to both winners. A special mention must be given to Jimmy O’Brien, Blarney Cork a regular at Ballyhass Lakes who caught 77 trout on Saturday. As there has been a great interest in the Saturday morning juvenile lessons the number of places available has expanded. The lesson runs for three hours from 10am until 1pm. SOUTH WESTERN REGION: Web: http://www.swrfb.com E Mail: swrfb@swrfb.ie From Eureka Lodge, Caherdaniel, angling guide Vincent Appleby reports on the past week’s fishing trends on the LOUGH CURRANE system: Email: salmonandseatrout@eircom.net Website: http://www.salmonandseatrout.com/ 30/3/08 made a reasonable flood through the night and early this morning, so as you can imagine my noble salmon weren’t in a taking mood, and as the lake was a bit on the dirty side that is not surprising. Wind SW light to fresh with heavy showers throughout the day, come late afternoon the wind veered NE. Amount of rainfall 14.6mm. 29/3/08 It was a wild and cold day on Lough Currane with strong to storm force SW wind blowing followed by hale storms with thunder and lightening and all anglers on the north side drew a blank but it was a different kettle of fish on the south side where Mr. John Bojtor of the UK and fishing out of www.lakelandshouse.com caught a fine 8 lbs. salmon on the troll going by the Ship with his Gillie Mr. Mike Dwyer. Weather as already stated except for the amount of rainfall of which was 14.3mm. Air temperature at its lowest was 6.2c/43.16f. 28/3/08 It was a wild day with a strong to WNW blowing and all fly stations were nigh on impossible to fish unless you wanted to be a contender for a cardiac arrest and I can tell you there were a few Gullies in contention fair play to them, but with all that Lough Currane came up with the goods for Mr. Jean Marie Dabel who caught a fine 9 lbs on the troll with his Gillie Mr. Vincent O’Sullivan and www.vincentsfishing.com Weather as I said strong winds and hale showers throughout the day, amount of rainfall 3.7mm. 27/3/08 fishing conditions this morning weren’t the best with the lake being like a milk pond but that soon changed around 11 am when the wind went SW then veered SSE and the fly Stations were in full action mode, but there was only one boat that saw action that was Mr. Jean Marie Dabel of France and his Gillie Mr. Vincent O’Sullivan of www.vincentsfishing.com who caught two salmon on the fly at the ledge in the Mouth of the Commeragh, both fish were in the 9 to 10 lbs. class and for the rest of we fly anglers the least said the soonest mended and the same goes for the anglers that troll. Wind in the afternoon SSE fresh to strong with light and at times heavy rain, amount of rainfall 9.2mm. 26/3/08 hale stones and light to fresh NNW wind and plenty of sun breaking through but with all that my noble angler couldn’t procure the old gentlemen. Air temperature 47f/8.6c. Amount of rainfall 2.5mm. 25/3/08 A nice few boats out fishing but all drew the jokers card. Wind NW light to fresh and overcast with the odd shower in the afternoon and came in heavy this evening but didn’t last long. Water temperature in Copal 9.9c/56f air temperature 13.2c/55f. That is all the news from your Gillie and the Waterville
