Irish Angling Update - 20th March, 2008

Greetings everyone,

Apologies for no angling update for a while now.  I have been away at fishing shows in France and recently at the NEC in Birmingham in the UK.  I am on leave until the 31st of March and I will be out fishing during that time.  With the changeable weather recently, there has been a fair bit of angling activity around the country.  Young David Campbell was our catch of the week winner with a huge Brown Trout of 13.17 lbs. which is on the front of our website at www.cfb.ie   There have been some nice Trout reported taken on Loughs Corrib and Mask in the past few weeks, and some also in the midland trout lakes around Mullingar.  There have some nice Salmon reported from Lough Currane, the River Drowes and the Cork Blackwater and only this week, the first Salmon of the season was reported from the River Moy. Several big Pike up to 37 lbs. were recently reported from several midland venues and this sport should continue for some weeks yet.  

There are a few coarse reports of mainly good bags of Roach from the north, midlands and eastern areas.  One thing I have to clear up any doubt on is that there is no permit required to fish either Lanesboro or Lough Ree.  An erroneous report appeared in the angling times recently stating that you needed a new permit to fish there.  The Shannon Regional Fisheries Board confirmed to me that this was not true.

With the recent windy weather, there has been only a small number of people out sea fishing but shore fishing is quiet good and a fine specimen ling recently featured on our catch of the week on our website.  

Finally the Irish Specimen Fish awards ceremony took place in Dublin and we also had Tom Mac Sweeney and Markcus Connaughton from RTE1 Seascapes programme presenting the new catch of the month awards to 12 winners at the event.  You can listen to Tom on seascapes on Monday evening at 10.30pm and I present an angling update on the programme once a month and announce the new catch of the month award winner.
