The Environment Agency is launching a new trout angler logbook this season to gather information about fisheries in the area and angling participation.

The fisheries team, based in Newcastle have set up the logbook scheme for trout anglers and are asking participants to note down the location of their fishing trip, and the size and species of fish they catch.

Anglers are being asked to keep a log of their trout fishing during the season to help to understand more about the extent of fishing in the area and the size and diversity of fish populations.  In the past, traditional survey methods such as electric fishing and netting has given fairly limited information on fish stocks.

Fisheries officer Michael Donkin said: "It is hoped that by using angler catch data more information about stocks of trout in the area will be gathered helping us to understand more about the distribution and health of the stocks".

It is hoped that the logbooks will provide the Environment Agency with additional information that can then be used to identify priorities for fish conservation and help towards improving access and habitat.  It will also contribute to the Environment Agency's continuing campaign to promote angling as a healthy and active pastime.

The logs books are available from the Environment Agency office in Newcastle, please contact Michael Donkin for further information  on 0191 2034060 or e-mail michael.donkin@environment-agency.gov.uk.
