BTP URGES ANGLERS TO RESIST THE LURE OF DEADLY SHORTCUTS OR FACE BEING NETTED

British Transport Police today warns anglers not to trespass on the railway lines to fish or they will end up being the catch of the day. 

Many railway lines are located in rural areas close to ponds, pools and rivers and the temptation to take short cuts proves too much for some.

British Transport Police is increasingly concerned that steel palisade fencing erected by Network Rail to prevent trespass on the railway is being bent or removed so that some anglers can gain access to favourite fishing spots.

Inspector Alan Radford, East Midlands Sector Commander explains:

“Anglers tend to be amongst the most law abiding members of the community but there is an irresponsible minority who will not let anything prevent them getting to the best pools or rivers".

"These people are creating great danger by removing fencing and trespassing on the railway, not only by compromising their own safety but by giving children an access point to the lines. They are also risking a criminal record".

"The only lines anglers should be using are at the end of a rod, not on the railway. If you are caught trespassing on the railway, you will be dealt with hook, line and sinker to the full extent of the law.”
