Flood-stranded fish to be rescued at Worcester Racecourse this afternoon

This afternoon (31 July 2007) from about 4.30pm, Environment Agency officers will once again attempt to rescue fish in danger of being stranded on Worcester Racecourse by receding floodwater as river levels fall on the River Severn.

The operation to net the fish and return them to the river is likely to take several hours.

It follows a similar rescue on 9 July 2007, when 10,000 fish were saved from certain death. Then, we could have saved many more fish if the incident had been reported to us earlier.

This time, we have been monitoring the situation and the decision has just been taken to bring in all available staff to rescue the fish.

Rescue operations such as this are funded from money raised from the sale of rod licences.

This money, provided by anglers, is used to help our work in managing fisheries and to improve angling for everyone.
