Welcome to the February edition of Ask Bob Nudd; the section of the site where Anglers Net visitors get the chance to put their ‘fishy’ questions to the four times World Champion;

Hi Bob,

I am 12 years old and I have been fishing with my dad for 5 years on the river Trent. We have just moved to Auckley in Doncaster and we have a lake called Hayfield Fishery. Please can you tell me how best to fish float / feeder / and what bait I need?

Thank you very much, Chris

Hi Chris,

Hayfield is a very difficult venue in the winter, but as soon as it warms up you can catch on most methods. I like to fish shallow (about 2 to 3 foot deep) loose feed casters and fish a small piece of worm on the hook.

Good fishing, Bob Nudd.

Hi Bob,

I’m 11 years old but I don’t know if you can catch roach or bream on yellow corn?

Thanks, Dale

Hi Dale,

Yes, bream and roach both love corn!

Good fishing, Bob Nudd.

Hi Bob,

Have you ever fished at Ringwood Lake or Poolsbrook? I had a cracking 18 pound out of Ringwood and was amazed to have it on bread. Could you tell me how to catch decent skimmers and bream?

Thanks, Daniel

Hi Daniel,

No, I have never fished either of these waters. The best way to fish for bream and skimmers is with a groundbait feeder using worms or red maggots as hookbait.

Good fishing, Bob Nudd.

Hello Bob,

I am 14 years old and my goal in life is to one day to be a world champion like yourself and do TV shows also like you. How would I go about reaching these goals because fishing is my life and I would like to make it my career? Please can you help?

Yours, Ashley Wenn

Hi Ashley,

Try to become very good at fishing and winning competitions, it’s not easy but if you are good enough then you can succeed.

Good Luck, Bob Nudd.

Hi Bob,

I’ve got a second hand pole a Browning Black Titanium 12m, I’m unable to get sections 5 and 6 to come apart, do you have any tips or shall I saw the no5 section, if so where can I buy a no5 section as they are now discontinued, by the way I’ve tried to get the sections to come apart using the usual methods, using 3 people, warm water, any help greatly appreciated.

Mark

Hi Mark,

Check with our head office to see if a 5 or 6 section is available info-uk@zebco-europe.com before you destroy a section. Have you tried two people pulling the sections at either end while you tap the joint with the side of your hand, this is normally the best way.

Good luck, Bob Nudd.

Hi Bob,

How do you set up a bagging waggler? Do you set it up like a normal float or do you use a hair rig?

Thanks, James

Hi James,

You can do either way, it just depends what bait you are using.

Good fishing, Bob Nudd.

Hi Bob,

Can you please tell me what’s the best way to make the perfect paste please?

Chris Fox, Blackpool

Hi Chris,

I just use the ready made Van Den Eynde or Ringers paste.

Good fishing, Bob Nudd.

Hi Bob,

I’m looking for a pole that’s under £300 and I fish for
mainly roach and bream. I live in Northern Ireland so I have no places to try out poles so I’ll probably buy from the internet.

Thanks, Jordan Armour

Hi Jordan,

The best pole in the Browning range at this price is the Power X- Tractor 14.5 Meters.

Good fishing, Bob Nudd.

Hi Bob,

I have been fishing for about 5 years now; I usually fish at a fishery called Whitmore Fisheries near Kirkham, Lancashire. The fish can get quite big there and I caught an 11lb carp, is this big or not really- it was a struggle tiring it to get it in. What lake or water do you usually fish on??

Ben Singleton (15)

Hi Ben,

Yes, an 11lb is a big fish and at that size they are never easy to land, well done.

I fish at a variety of waters, usually where the best competitions are.

Good fishing, Bob Nudd.

Hi Bob,

What is the most efficient way to catch as many fish as possible whilst fishing up in the water for carp on commercial carp water? PS – Have you ever heard or Bradshaw fisheries Lancashire, if so what do you recommend?

Thanks, Arron 15

Hi Arron,

I have heard of Bradshaw fisheries, the best way to catch carp up in the water is to feed small pellets 2 or 3mm and then use a banded or expander pellet on the hook, keep feeding small amounts continually while lifting and dropping your hookbait.

Good fishing, Bob Nudd.

Hi Bob,

Just wanted to ask you how to plumb depth properly with a waggler?

Gillian

Hi Gillian,

Make sure the float is shotted as you want it, then use a small shot AA or BB, pinch it on the line just above the hook, if the float sinks after casting then it is to shallow, adjust until the small shot hits bottom and the float doesn’t sink under you have then found the depth, remove the shot and you are ready to fish.

Good Fishing, Bob Nudd.

Hi Bob,

Could you give me to tips such as; how to make pole rigs, how to tie spade end hooks, how to get ready for the season? Could I fish with you some day and how?

Thank you, William age 14 from Liverpool

Hi William,

Check out your fishing mags or DVD’s for hook tying and rig making etc, it is just too much information for an E mail. Yes if I am fishing up your way one day you can come with me.

Best regards, Bob Nudd.

Hi bob,

I’m only 14 and have been carp fishing for a short while now I fish a local commercial pond called Emerald Pool Fishery and regularly fish the match pool landing between 5 and 8 carp in the first half of the day on my pole(11m zeta) But after 12ish I don’t seem to catch anymore carp . I use mainly sweetcorn and maggot as I don’t tend to spend loads on bait. Please could you tell me some bait combos that will work for carp tench and larger roach in winter as I’m rather getting bored of the day being the same every session

Many thanks, Curtis Hicks

Hi Curtis,

Sweetcorn and maggots are the best baits for winter carp, you could try worms or soft pellets these are also very good.

Best regards, Bob Nudd.

Dear Bob,

Our son Connor is 14 and wants to know how he can enter fishamania 2006 can you please point us in the right direction?

Many thanks, Sandra Bridger

Hello Sandra,

There is a list of qualifying matches posted on the NFA website, they will all be well oversubscribed, you have to list your interest and then they will draw to decide who fishes. I am not sure if there is an age limit.

Best regards, Bob Nudd.

Hi Bob,

Where is the best place in a lake to find bream, in the margins or the middle of the lake?

Sam

Hi Sam,

Usually the middle of the lake, or in the deeper water.

Good fishing, Bob Nudd.

Hi Bob,

I am 13 years old and trying to make my own groundbait. I have got a long French baguette it is white so I am going to grate it using a cheese grater so I will have white breadcrumb I also have some vanilla flavouring when would I put the flavouring in? Would I put it in when mixing it with water or put the flavouring in then the water?

From Jamie

Hi Jamie,

Just add your flavouring to the water before mixing it w
ith the bread.

Good fishing, Bob Nudd.

HI BOB,

I AM FISHING A BIT MORE DURING THE WINTER MONTHS, BUT I DONT SEEM TO CATCH AS MANY FISH AS IN THE SUMMER. SHOULD I USE A FEEDER ROD MORE THEN MY POLE?

Hi Shane,

This is normal, fish do not feed as well in winter, and your catch rate will always be less. The feeder will only be better when the fish are out of pole range.

Good fishing, Bob Nudd.

Hello Bob,

I had a Black Magic 111 set up for me last Summer, it consists of the pole, 1.5 mtr ext, a cupping kit made from a genuine top 3 kit, 3 top 3 kits and a top 4 kit. It is all elasticated up and has only been used 6 times last summer. It cost a lot of money as you must realise, but I have a bad back and was advised that this would be a good set up. Unfortunately I realised that even this hurts my back and I must sell it. I know I’m going to loose a lot of money and somebody is going to pick up a real bargain, so I don’t know a sensible price to put it in the paper for?

Regards Ian Bell

Hi Ian,

Sorry to hear about your misfortune. I would think you should get at least £300, but I am sure with all those kits its worth a lot more.

Best regards, Bob Nudd.

Hi Bob,

I know it’s harder in winter, but what groundbait should I try for tench and carp, and how light should my main line be, and hook length on a pole?

Hi Shane,

I use Van Den Eynde Expander Gold; it’s a great fishmeal groundbait. Hook length should be .12mm (2.5lb) and main line .15mm (4lb)

Good fishing, Bob Nudd.

Hi Bob,

My name is Rupert and I love fishing I live in Essex and I am part of a club I fish their waters a lot and I catch Roach, Rudd, Perch and sometimes small Tench, however, when I try fishing for bigger carp, tench and bream I don’t catch. Could you giver me some tips.

Thanks Rupert

Hi Rupert,

Try fishing with pellets or sweetcorn, that will catch you the bigger fish.

Good fishing, Bob Nudd.

Hi Bob,

I am fishing a mach on the canal in Ilkeston this weekend with my local club Pride of Derby juniors. I used bloodworm and joker at my last mach and came 3rd but I only caught little roach, rudd, perch and bream all under a pound could you give me some tips to catch some bigger fish?

Thanks, Luke Smith

Hi Luke,

You did well to come third. Use casters to catch the bigger fish but still fish with bloodworm and jokers as well, while loose feeding casters very sparingly across to the far side of the canal. Try fishing with casters during the last part of the match.

Good fishing, Bob Nudd.
