If only we could give him a rod and reel….

There has been a fair bit of talk about fishing on television recently, with Robson Green proving to be the hottest topic. However, as you’ll see from the clip below, extreme fishing is something that some people really do as part of their everyday life, not just for TV audiences!

Sulbin is a Bajau spear fisherman and, in this clip, you see him diving to 20-metres, walking on the sea bed, locating a fish and then spearing it. This is all without the aid of breathing apparatus or weights to keep him on the bottom.

I know this isn’t ‘angling’ and there are some people who don’t like to see fish killed, but to me this particular clip shows a part of ‘nature’ as natural as seeing a lion take a gazelle, or an owl catch a rodent. I found it mesmerising.

Walking On The Sea BedAccording to the BBC, there are quite a few stories about fishing coming up during the Human Planet series. Examples include fantastic footage of fishing on the edge of Victoria Falls, fishing on a tightrope across the Mekong river and fishing in collaboration with dolphins in Brazil. You can see pictures of some of these stories at http://www.bbc.co.uk/humanplanet/gallery/ and we hope to bring you further details on Anglers’ Net, so please pop back or keep an eye out for us on Facebook – http://www.facebook.com/AnglersNet
