What do you reckon caused this?

We’re used to receiving photos of fish here, usually perfectly-finned specimens proudly held up for the camera by a delighted angler. It’s what makes us anglers happy.

Usually, such photos get posted on the Anglers’ Net Facebook page. You’ve probably seen them at http://www.facebook.com/AnglersNet

However, we recently received the following email, complete with photos of carp with a red rash, and decided to post them here to get your views…..

Hi,

I have a general question which I hope readers could answer. I’ve carried research on the ‘net, but can’t find a definite answer.

I went fishing at local lake in North Yorkshire on Sunday 16th September and had a good bag of fish all day, catching lots of stocky carp between 1-3 lb.

Almost all the Mirror Carp I caught appeared to have a reddish type rash running down the side of the fish.

I have attached two pics so you can see.

From what I can gather it’s not a parasite and some people have said it may be due to chemicals in the water due to spawning !!!!!!!

Friends have also seen the rash in other locations as well, not just the lake I was fishing.

Can your readers help?

Thanks,

Ian Johnson
