Supermarket Bargains

But they don't sell fishing tackle, do they?

It's a well known fact that some of the most productive baits over the past few decades have come from supermarkets; think bread, sweetcorn and Spam for starters! However, I've found myself picking up more and more little bargains over the course of the past two years from their hardware sections.

Take today, for example, and these two cracking offers from Tesco....

Rolson Diamond Sharpening PenFirst up was this Rolson Diamond Sharpening Pen. These are great little sharpeners and many of the Anglers' Net Forum members own similar ones, as we discussed them some time back.

With a V-shape channel for sharpening hooks, they are an excellent addition to a tacklebox. Peronally, I find this type of sharpener great for lure trebles and the larger hooks that I use when sea fishing, although there's nothing to stop you using them on smaller sizes.

The price of this particular sharpening pen? Currently 75p! Yep, I paid less than a quid for this one!

Another bargain I picked up today was this 1-litre kettle. To be honest, I didn't actually need one for fishing, as I already use one just like it. However, I recently threw a spare stove and a few bits and pieces into the back of my Land Rover for those cold winter days when I'm stuck outside, fishing or not, so having this one permanently stored there means that I don't have to worry about forgetting to take my other one.

1-litre kettleThese are handy little lightweight kettles, the sort you've probably seen in a number of shops, with the little 'filter' in the top that means you can use it as a teapot, should you so wish. It weighs only 159g and cost me a measly £2.50! Yep, probably less than a cup of motorway station coffee! Thanks, Tesco.

Oh, by the way, the stove I have in my Land Rover is the sort that uses the aerosol-style cartridges. As it's out of season for the camping fraternity, The Range have been selling them off at £4.99 for 4, so I stocked up. Not a supermarket bargain, technically, but another example of a great unexpected deal!

So, next time your other half asks you to do the weekly shopping with them, say “yes”. They'll be over the moon....until you sneak off to the hardware, camping and sporting sections that all these big stores seem to have these days!

Happy bargain hunting,

Elton
