"Fly fishing at its best! Carsington Water is a stunning trout fishery situated in the heart of the stunning Derbyshire countryside.  Its natural beauty, tranquil atmosphere, crystal clear waters and stunning fish combine to make Carsington Water addictive to anglers. Its gin clear waters are stocked with fish up to 5lb and fish are stocked weekly throughout the season."

Summer morning over Carsington reservoir Derbyshire

Carsington reservoir is nestled on the edge of the Peak District in the heart of the picturesque Derbyshire countryside. I am lucky enough to live relatively close to this fantastic fly fishing venue and I have visited it regularly for the past 10 years. When Carsington first opened for fly fishing it was a brown trout only venue, but as time went on and new management took over, rainbows were eventually introduced and have now made full use of the abundant food larder in this 740 acre reservoir.

On arrival, we promptly paid for our day tickets, talking to Sylvia who works on reception and is very helpful. She was quickly pointing out the areas that had recently been producing fish. The rod average was down mainly due to the bright conditions of late, but today was overcast so we stood a better chance of catching a few fish. We fished a drift along middle wood and it was not long before a hungry rainbow took my point fly a gold headed hare’s ear nymph. These fish fight hard and after a long battle and several good runs, I landed this well conditioned rainbow. I strongly recommend you use nothing less than 5lb mono at this venue!

There are some lovely brown trout in Carsington and they take some catching, but my boat partner Graham Howe was lucky enough to take one on a fry imitation fishing up to the weeds in Upperfields Bay.

We continued to catch steadily throughout the day. The key here is to keep moving about and fish all the different areas; there are lots of bays, features and drop offs to explore. Don’t be surprised if you also catch a specimen Perch like the one I caught below - there are some whoppers in Carsington due to the abundance of fry!

If you haven’t already, treat yourself and give Carsington reservoir a visit. You wont be disappointed. The scenery is simply stunning and there is some quality fishing on offer. However, there is No Bank Fishing, so make sure you pre book your boat to avoid disappointment.
