Already happning on the Broads Leon. It is 'European' money that just has to be spent! In fairness the Broads Authority is listening and so is the EA. So far it has gone to plan, but some of the environmental scars are pretty drastic, although time will heal them. Angling is having a say, and angling is being listened to. The alternative is to do nothing, but as far as the Broads are concerned that is not an option. So far Broads angling is coming out of it pretty well.

er,

"North Norfolk District Council's head of law and property, Peter Frew, said the council could not justify spending £100,000 on major work when a saltwater incursion of the Broads was 50 years away."

Millions are being pumped into Broadland as we speak Leon. £100,000.00 at Happisburgh is chicken feed to the national budget, but a huge amount to a relatively sparse local population. My guess is that NNDC is refusing to spend, relying on eventual Government help. Basically it means that everything that is being done within Broadland will be wasted if the sea is allowed to break through, or under the sea defences at Waxham etc. Yes, I think they know that the EA will have to step in, or loose the lot.

UEA's findings are, as I understand it, being questioned by some experts from the North Seas oil industry. It appears, to some, that the computer model may be flawed. I have to say I am not an expert and am relying on opinions from others, some of which are experts, I think!

There may be a doomsday scenario, well, I know that there is. But at the moment it appears that the 'experts' are still not in agreement. If 50 years is the expected remaining life of the Broads as we know it then an awful lot of money is being invested in the short term.

I had a huge wodge of Broads Authority material land on my doormat this morning. If, as I plough through it, I find some worthwhile web material then I will keep you posted Leon.

A 10 cm rise in sea level since 1953 is quite something!

Strange thing is Stumac, whilst we have a mean sea level rise, we haven't, in reality seen any of a number of surges go abouve the '53 level. Match it, yes. But the maximum has not been exceeded.

I think you need a very special set of circumstances to get a big surge, and they just don't hapen that often. Peak winds coming right at the top of a big tide.

How long did it take for the fishing to recover after the big floods??

For the past 5 years I've cycled back and forth across the Tay bridge almost every day. The river is 1.5 miles wide at this point, which is about 5 miles from the open sea and even on a realtively calm day it's amazing how big an effect wind direction can have on the water levels.

An onshore gale with a rising spring tide and loads of water coming down the Tay usually means a flood in Perth, which is ~10 miles further upstream.

It is the 'wrong' wind on top of a surge that will cause the problems StuMac.

The general recovery in '54 was amazingly quick, although it was 10 years before huge pike were being caught again. Oulton Broad, where I live, was totally salted out, yet in 1955 perch of four pounds and over were once again being caught.

Had some bumph from the Broads Authority this morning. Minutes from a meeting of one of the sub committees stated that it had to be accepted that holding the sea back to existing boundaries is impractical.

The Broads Authority (BA) has a Sea Level Rise and Shoreline Management Plan and a Broads Research Advisory Panel. A seminar is scheduled for 18th November. Members attending will include English Nature and the Environment Agency. Apparently there are well established links with counterparts to the BA within Holland & Belgium with which information & intelligence is exchanged.

I think, Leon, that much will come from this seminar. If you have any questions that you would like me to put forward then please let me know.
