I originally posted this in another topic, but decided to post a new thread in case anyone missed it....

I've just received an email saying that flies are not machine-made, only badly made by hand. Now, I'm pretty certain that in the late 60's/early 70's I watched a Jack Hargreaves programe that showed flies being tied on a machine (probably in a small workshop rather than a major company), and a tackle shop owner in the mid 80's informed me that most of the flies he had on sale were machine made and inferior to hand made examples.

Can anyone confirm that some flies you buy in shops are indeed made by machine?

Many thanks and Tight Lines

Hi John do you tie flies yourself? I would be very suprised if there has been a machine made that is capeable of tieing a fly. There are plenty of poorly hand tied fly's on the market though rolleyes.gif .

John,

I would doubt that flies are entirely machine tied.

If you want a definitive answer talk to Steve Parton of Sparton Tackle in Long Eaton, Notts. He has written a recent book on fly tieing that mentions speed of tieing and various machines people have tried to use in the past. His website is sparton or similar.

Hope this helps.

I'll have a look for that Tim, thanks smile.gif

Elton, this may mean a small re-write (again rolleyes.gif ).

Sparton Tackle has a new web site at http://www.spartonfly.dial.pipex.com/

The old one at http://www.spartonfly.co.uk/ isn't working any more.

Got that one Newt smile.gif

Thankfully it was 3rd in a search that threw up over 3,000 matches

Unfortunately it isn't really up and running at the moment, but I have it added to my favourites already. I will try to contact Steve on this subject however, since it is somewhat important for the forthcoming Flytying section.... well, for the Introduction at least.

Thanks friends smile.gif
