My brother-in-law has just informed me that he's seen someone fishing on the river Rother, Sheffield, today, and yesterday. Is this legal? And if not can anyone tell me the phone number he should be using to report this?

Thanks very much,
Paul

In some areas there are byelaws that allow eelfishing, and on tidal stretches you can fish for sea fish, but generally there is a close season on rivers until June 16th.

The Environment Agency to call for illegal fishing, pollution etc is 0800 807 060.

the rother doesnt have any eel byelaws (as far as i know) and isnt tidal.
it is also in my experience often fished by the type of angler who doesn't bother with such trifling matters as licenses and seasons

Thanks Leon, number has been passed onwards, and a phone call will be made this evening.

As Jeepster says, the Rother is definitely not tidal, not sure about the eels bit. The angler had two feeder rods out, so I don't think he was after eels.

He's had trout apparently, told my brother-in-law that he had a 5lb'er the other day....hmmmmm. I know the Rother is clean now, but I doubt it's been clean long enough for a trout to get to that size.

Am I right in thinking that Yorkshire, along with Cornwall, didn't have a close season in the olden days.

Yorkshire had a closed season but it opened earlier than other regions. A week early if I recall correctly.
