The River Saone used to be an excellent venue for Wells Catfish. It has however suffered from very heavy gill netting in recent years and is now sadly a shadow of its former self.Cats can still be caught but there are now much better venues. If you want to have a go on the Saone still I will gladly give you all the information you will need.

On the other hand, if you are after the bullhead catfish (Le poisson-chat), they seem to have a more than ample supply in all the rivers and many of the lakes.

Hi,
any information given on catfishing in france would be much appreciated, my mate & I are going to go there next year at the end of june & to say the least we are novices, so any tackle tips would be good. I have found a good website to purchase catfish tackle http://www.catfishconservationgroup.co.uk/uk2shop.htm
just dont know what to buy yet.

Hi colinmcall and welcome. I can't help you directly since I don't fish that area but catfish are great fun.

Just looked at the CCG shop site and they do have a good selection but the prices seem a bit high.

Hopefully someone on here can give you some specifics. Budgie is probably your man since he spent some years as a professional catfish guide although more in Spain I think.

BTW - my "poisson-chat" comment above, while true, was a joke. The bullhead that are so common in France are considered a major nuisance by the folks who fish there. Never get very large with most under 2 lbs, a large mouth so they can take a bait as large as they are, and an unending appetite. I do think folks who catfish there are missing a good bet though since I like them for live bait and I've never heard of them being used that way in Europe.

If you haven't already seen it, This recent thread has a little more catfish information.
