Today I have seen fish feeding on my breadbag for the first time this year. there have been reports of fish around the area for the last few weeks but these are the first seen in the dock (Southampton) this year. One of the fish has a distinctivley marked head, round one eye from nose to gill cover is whiteish, this fish was resident in the dock last year.
Has anybody else noticed in their areas that the same fish can return year on year?
In this dock fish have shown up within 4 days of the 1st of May for the last 5 years according to my records, this year being no exception. How do they know the date???
Yet another mystery about these annoyingly frustrating fish we nutters all love so much.
The rods go in the car this weekend and I'll hope to catch my first one soon.
Best wishes to all fellow Mullet nutters, lets hear your reports of sightings/catches

Large mullet in particular are often identifiable from damage to fins, unusual scale patterns etc and they do indeed often turn up in the same swims year on year - a very good reason for putting them back! National Mullet Club did some tagging in the 1990s; the return rate was low but there was substantial evidence that mullet remain around the same area during the season and some evidence to support the idea that they come back the following season. The Medway Mullet have been about for several weeks now. Though those I've seen creeping in with the incoming tide have been small, best a couple of pounds. Hopefully our better fish will show soon.

Tight lines

I caught a glimpse of the year's first mullet feeding on a weed covered pontoon a couple of weeks ago in the Arun but i've been busy building a trailer for my new boat so haven't had a chance to visit the river since. However, first reports of captures came through on Monday and if the current warm spell continues there should be some more.Gonna have a look tomorrow.

Had my first of the year last Sunday, about 3 1/4lbs. Taken on light float gear it was a lot of fun.
Had a swim building nicely, getting lots of knocks and dips on the float, until a guy came along for chat. I'm keeping back from the water with a low profile, the fish being under my rod tip in water 18" deep, so he stands about 2ft from my float looking down on it asking if I've had anything. Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr . . The answer to his question . . "I was".
