Just added an EFTTA Press release here:

http://www.anglers-net.co.uk/news/articles/435.html

In it, it states:

quote:
The price of elvers has risen from £29 per kilo in 1985 to a peak of more than £500 per kilo in recent years.

Can that be right? I don't suppose there'll be anyone there at 1am to answer my query LOL

The price of Elvers is along with everything else subject to the laws of supply and demand.

Problem is, when demand exceeds supply up goes the price and fishers chase smaller stocks.
When the price jumps so more and more people see this as an oppotunity to make some money and conservation takes a back seat.

Hope they locate the source of the problem. If it is the Gulf stream it would mean one of two things. The adults not making it to the Sagasso in the first place, or the Elvers being unable to return to British/Irish waters.
