Hi All,
Does anyone know who stocks our rivers with fish?.
Are they stocked?.
Is it only done by the EA, or do clubs also stock their own parts of the river?.
It is hard to see the viability of clubs doing it, as the fish could travel beond their own fishery.
Unless it was a joint venture for all the clubs.
........Liam

The river Gipping in Suffolk was jointly stocked by the EA and Gipping Angling and Preservation society. Before that there were very few fish present.
Wunnus may know more.
Dippy the British record river carp got in there somehow. Some claim it escaped from an adjoining pit (it has lived in most along the river) BUT most round here dont belive that one!!!!!!!!!!

Presumably a stretch between 2 weirs would be a reasonable 'enclosure' for decent-sized fish? And any fry that go over would help seed lower stretches....

if any river is to be stocked with fish then the ea has to be involved to ensure the health of both the fish and the ecosystems present in the river, so as a rule, the ea will stock most rivers, although angling amalgamations will sometimes get approval to do so.

Don't be fooled by the impressiveness of wiers, they don't hold back fish. The tidal stretch of the Medway near me, is well stocked with Carp to 30+, but they've never been stocked there. They have negotiated a flood gate, or a lock, or just got there down a relief channel which floods in high rain. Right up the Medway, there are seemingly impenetarable barriers for the fish, but they get through with no problems.

If a flow is strong, fish will wash over a wier without any ill effects. Chub, will swim up virtually any flow, Barbel love it!

Remember though, whatever you do to your own stretch of river, will effect other stretches.

Sorry, when I say the Tidal is well stocked, i mean stocks are quite high, but they've never been officially "stocked" there.

They actually don't like the tidal very much and regularly turn up dead at this time of year.

Thanks! for the input lads, it was just something that I was wondering about.
I did think that the EA would have to be involved, but wondered if it was a common thing for clubs to do.
