Ok, today I went down to a Pike Anglers Club 'teach-in' on one of our local canals. Ive been itching to get into pike fishing for ages now and used it as an opportunity to get some tips - however all but one of us blanked!

Now whenever ive been piking in the past ive used lures as I like to be able to search the water and feel like im doing something to find the fish as opposed to hoping that they stumble across it and get the smell. Anyway, today, again i brought my lure setup but was informed that there was no way lures would catch in winter by a PAC member unless i dropped in on the nose of a fish.

Now i read on another post that due to high pressure lures would probably work better over deadbaits. I gather that there's no definitive answer as to which would work and when but is there a general rule of thumb that someone can point me in the right direction with?

Thanks chaps

Hey sluk by lures do you mean plugs/spinners? Fancy a bash at fly fishing for the critters this year. Gonna tie me up some mean perch imatations. Will post up a piccy when I tie one. Got a caravan Mull of Galloway and just found out at the end of the season about a local loch(whitefield or whitfield) that holds pike, perch and I think carp but not sure about the carp. So was told that a 26lb pike came out last year and a 4.5lb perch came out on a trial netting - is that big or what. Come on you coarse fishers try the Mull for a holiday. mullet like salmon as well by the way and bass on poppers. If you want more info giz a PM or whatever.

Highs for lures, lows for deads and lives for both.

As for the mutt who said that you can't catch pike in the winter on lures without dropping it right on top of the pike' nose, as I said, mutt!

Its the circles on the weather map what say 'Hi'!!

Yes, it is baromic pressure. Low might be 900 millibars whilst 1100 would be considered high.

Just a thought, is your barometer a tad old? Some old ones measured pressure in inches. Stormy is low, fair is high. Mine's reading 960 millibars at this moment.

Pretty much so! Bit of a dilemma.

Still, the moon's on the wane so I'd favour lures!

P.S. It's what is heading this way that is, I think, the deciding factor.

Is it long and thin? Might be worth a new rod or two!
