I drowned my electronic, digital, all flashing scales the other day. So it was off to the tackle shop to replace them. I live in hope, my spare set only go to 20lbs!

A fine set of Reuben Heaton scales to 60lbs now graces my tackle bag. 60 lb pike!! You never know

But on the box they are described as 'Carp Scales'! But why? Do carp anglers need to be told that these scales can be used to weigh carp?

Shimano market their Tribal clothing, amongst which is a Carp Smock. Does this mean that a pike angler can't wear one? Or does it mean that carp anglers need to be told that they can wear such a garment whilst fishing for carp!!

Calling a carp rod a carp rod makes sense. A good carp rod and a good pike rod are different, aren't they?

But why this name tag on things that can be used by other species anglers and that any carp angler, with half a brain, can see are also suitable for carp fishing?

No, I'm not critiscising carp anglers, but I am critiscising the manufacturers. Do carp anglers really need to be told what is suitable for their fave species? No, ofcourse not, so why do it?

Peter, I think it's all a marketing ploy. Stick the word carp on any item of tackle and the manufacturer can put another 1/3rd on their price.

Carp anglers are renowned for spending mega bucks on tackle to persue their quarry, so is it any wonder the decent carp gear is expensive.

Take Fox gear for example - buy a Fox bivvy for 200 to 350 quid because its a Fox product, on the other hand you can buy perfectly serviceable alternatives for a fraction of the price.

I do believe you get what you pay for but Fox always seems expensive to me, especially when you consider sundry items such as rucksacks, reel cases and bait bags etc.

Well,

Fish scales has sort of a strange sound to it.

Shark scales - don't think they are up to the job. Same with Catfish Scales.

Perch Scales - nope. That's no good either.

I don't think much of the quality of the Tribal cloths compared with Pro-Logic for example, so maybe it was a misprint!!

But hopefully my new scales are far from it. They are being discounted just about everywhere and seem to be excellent quality for a reasonable price, despite being called Carp!

I've had a pair for many years and have nothing but praise for them. They're certainly miles more reliable than the electronic ones that hate damp and which I gave up on.

If travelling light though I take a pair of the smaller and lighter 30lb Waymasters and leave the 60lb scales in the car. The Waymasters are now also made by Reuben Heaton, who tell me that they replaced the tooling when they took over the production so that the scales should last longer.

Hopefuly one day I'll be pleased to have to trudge back to the car. smile.gif

Now, now, Peter, you know as well as I that it's called a 'Carp Smock' to prevent pike anglers wasting 2 hours looking for the sleeves.

I have had a set of Berkley digital scales for about 8 years now, they have taken a few duckings as well as a lot of salt water. The most I have managed to get them to go to is 20Kilo (by pulling not with fish sad.gif )

The remark about 1/3 on the price of carp gear is spot on.
