Well, Mon and Tues eve saw me down at one of our local club gravel pits. Unlike Anderoo's bank holiday thread it was idyllic - very few there, at least on the pit I was on, and a real Crabtree evening atmosphere, with mummy and daddy Canada Goose waddling around with their 'big chick' offspring, carp topping and the float sliding away occasionally as a tench took the bait.

BUT there were the gnats! Part of the scene, I realise, and evidence that there must be plenty of bloodworm around for the fish. But they seem to like biting me quite a lot for reasons yet to be explained. This is usually on the back of the thighs. Has anyone else found the same? And how do they do it? I had cords on tucked into wellies. Do they bite through the cords - not possible, surely? Or do they crawl down into the welly and up again? Any theories?

They stick their stabber thgrough your trousers and inject you with anti coagulant then suck you dry. I was on the canal the other night and am still scratching red spots all over my head, neck, arms, hands and legs. They never botherd my m8's who incidently both sat puffing away on their Cigs all through the session. Apparantly if your fair skinned they like to suck your blood even more...........bast***s !!

a real Crabtree evening atmosphere,

No it wasn't! tongue.gif Else you would not have got bitten.

Clouds of St Bruno smoke (generated by Mr Crabtree's pipe) would have created an authentic atmosphere and kept the gnats at distance.

I am now on my last tin of Balkan Sobranie (alas, discontinued some years back when I bought up all the local supply) which is a better gnat repellent and a better smoke.
