Hi all, can anybody help this visitor to the site?
---------------------------------------------------------
Hi,

I am having trouble fishing quite a fast flowing river in Spain; when I am baiting up I have no way of knowing where my bait is settling. Can anybody help?

---------------------------------------------------------
Cheers, Julian

Use a large swin feeder, clip the line to the reel when you find your distance and the bait should hit the same place each time.

Or use PVA "stockings", if the flow is very fast add some stones within the mesh bag. If you can't obtain PVA ( it is very expensive for what it is ) mix bread crumb plus some hook bait into a ball with a large stone in the middle. Ensure that the mix is sound enough not to break up on hitting the water. If its several meters deep, um . . perhaps someone else has some bright ideas, not just advise a bigger stone. Looking for some cheap ground bait . . visit you local pet shop.

The trouble with introducing bait to a flow is that it rapidly disappears dwonstream, taking the fish with it. That's especially so if you are throwing in handfuls of loose feed.

What you want is a steady endless flow of particles that will bring the fish upcurrent towards you.

Try a net, filled with mashed bread etc and weighted with stones and drop that just a little way upstream from your fishing position. (A cord will mean that you can retrieve it to refill/take home).

A steady stream of particles will be washed from the bag and tumble downstream, and the fish will follow the particle stream upcurrent to your fishing position, gathering and feeding at the bag.

Sometimes you may be able to suspend the bag from an overhanging tree, a bridge or some other structure, rather than placing it on the bottom.

If you want to introduce the particles higher in the water, then attach the bag to a stone, by a cord so that it floats above the 'anchor' weight at the depth you are aiming for.

What are you fishing for? The reason I ask is if you are trying to bait up an area for carp then the best way is to simpley find an area that will hold your bait! A slack, back water,or deppression in the river bed are good. Not only does your bait stay put in these areas but more importantly they are areas that naturally hold food so the carp will be checking them out.I have used this aproach for carp in many big European rivers including ones in Spain.
