People who refuse to register for the government's planned ID card scheme could face a "civil financial penalty" of up to £2,500, it has emerged.
David Blunkett said not making registering a criminal issue would avoid "clever people" becoming martyrs.

Strnge that he uses the words " clever people " , obvious not refering to the dumb labour voters then .
Nice to see our home secretary has his sights (sic) on the important targets. Can't have clever people becoming martyrs, can we? Oh no. Clever people are bad. They might think for themselves. And do stuff that we don't approve of.

It's also nice to see him telling us how ID cards will be good for stopping terrorism, because "we'll know where people are." That indicates as surely as anything that carrying the card will be compulsory, and implies that somehow it will track our locations. Will we need to submit travel plans to the secret police before we're allowed to go anywhere?
And that's before we think of the implications of having DNA profiles on ID cards, which will tell doctors whether we're genetically inclined to certain diseases, and therefore we aren't worth treating etc. Or all those other things that are made statistically more or less likely from the DNA, which will suddenly be available to anyone who looks...

Scary thing is, we're going to have to trust politicians (and those in other positions of power) to store this information securely and not abuse it.

Frankly, I wouldn't trust most of them to tie their own shoelaces.
