finally got broadband at home, virtually everywhere in the country must now be able to get it. will save us a fortune, isdn was bankrupting me!
set up a wireless network too got the mac upstairs and the laptop where i want it, having trouble with the range of the wireless signal though, anyone got any tips for extending the range? (apart from the obvious ones like positioning etc!)
also having bother with media player which insists on trying to connect to a dial up connection when i try to get album information off the net, despite already being connected via broadband, anyone got any ideas on that?

http://news.managingautomation.com/fullstory/30310 (note: MSRP is manufacturer's suggested retail price so you can usually find the item for less but in that general range)

from your browser, Tools => internet options => connections => Never dial a connection

My Daughter is in Sheffield at unit and 4 of them wish to share a broadband connection in the house they live in.
It will be a wireless connection.
Thay have Already had a quote for monthly broadband at 750 speed for £28 per month which i think is a bit steep.
Can anyone from the sheffield area tell me the cheapest broadband providor in the area and how much it should cost for the network cards and router.

tyke, all the regular broadband packages i found allow 2 pc's at most and were about £25-30. if the one you've seen does allow 4 then it would seem to be a bargain

Jeepster, you need to open Internet Explorer, Tools => internet options => connections => Never dial a connection

Even though you use Firefox, there are many of your applications (including media player) which use Internet Explorer for connecting to the internet.

jeepster - if you have your own router/switch to hook to the modem, your ISP only sees one device at your house. They see the router and can't really tell it isn't your one home PC.

Tyke - no idea about exact UK prices but US and the network cards for your needs if you want wired should be around $10 each, cables under $5 each unless you need really long ones, and a router/switch that will do you nicely will be around $50 and should include a good hardware firewall at that price. UK should be somewhat similar I imagine.

thats news to me newt, i always thought the router showed the ip of each machine, good news for tyke!

tyke, you should look at www.expansys.com, they are very good for routers etc, but if they decide to go wireless, it doesnt see through walls very well, especially the 10 inch think ones in my house!

and cheers for clarifying that nick, i'll check it now
