out fishing yesterday had one friend holding my rod while i tied on a new hook (which happend to be a size 10 barbed korda longshank hook, designed for easy penetration on hard waters)embedded intomy thumb....what happend was another kid i was with, only 11yrs old walked straight past got his feet all tangled in my line and pulled the hook into my thumb straight past the point and all the way round the bend to the start of the shank, and to anyone that hast seen these hooks they are big.

the hook wouldnot budge out due to the microbarb doing what it was designed to do.
i had to go to a&e and have 7 anasthetic needles into my thumb (the first 3 wernt enough to completely numb my thumb, the nurse then force the hook out of my thumb so it went into my thumb and back out5mm further down. then the male nurse tried 2 pairs of wire clippers to cut the hook by the eye befor it was pulled all the was round and out.

NOT something i want to try again even if the needle are worse than the hook penertration its self.

it just goes to prove korda hooks do what they say on the tin (so to speak.

if any one else has any stories they wanna share lets hear them.

i was sea fishing on Folkestone pier and standig next to my rod when an angler positioned himself between me and the next chap ,before i had the chance to say anything he swung his rod at full tilt ,i instinctivly put my hand infront of my face and recieved a 4/0 hook straight through the base of my finger (it would have been my face if i haddent reacted  ) not only was that a tad painfull it was even more so as the weight bore on it in flight ,the chap never said a word he just cut the line at the hook and went away muttering .
an old fellat cut of the point and pulled it out ,i still have the scars  by the time i got over the shock the angler had disapeared never to be seen again

A couple of years ago we, Liam & I were down on the Isles of Scilly camping, went out fishing one evening with a couple we had met (Liam was 6) he had his crab line in his bucket, you know the ones, orangle nylon line with a plasitc holder & size 4? hook.

He was running across the beach & the weight bounced out of the bucket causing the line to tangle around his leg thus embedding the, by now, blunt hook well into his calf

For those of you that don't know 'Scilly' we camp on St Agnes the smallest island, no hospitals or doctors! To cut a long story short, out came the 'multi tool' sterilised in the sea, having been digging out clams for crab bait with it all day. Once we convinced Liam he wasn't going to die because he had a hook in him, he stopped crying while I cut off the eye of the hook, made a small hole in his leg for the hook to come out, I knew if I tried to pull it out with the size of the barb on those crab hooks I would have pulled half his calf muscle out as well

Anyway once I had made a small hole for the point of the hook to come out, I just got hold of it with the pliers and 'followed' it through. We put some antiseptic on it and his first words when we had finished were " can we still go fishing?" thats my boy biggrin.gif

Mind you it's times like that I am pleased his 'pain theshold' is so high!

If you have ever had a barbed hook in you you would never dream of putting one in a fish.

I dunno Gobio. I have put the occasional barbed hook into my hide. I do still fish with them most times.

All - removal of a barbed hook (from a person) with little-to-no additional damage and almost no pain isn't that difficult if you have someone else who can do the work.

Fishhook Removal from the American Family Physician's web site does a nice job of covering the options.

You're right, Newt. Get a mate to remove it and look the other way. Always better than waiting for hours in casualty only for a doctor to do exactly the same thing.
Most painful for me was a 1/0 barbed into the base of my thumb, to the bone, when my hand slipped while lifting out a pike. That's right, hooked in the thumb with a pike attached and kicking around. Ouch!
Mate removed it with pliers (short, sharp pull) while I looked the other way.

PS: thought I'd better add that the 1/0 was attached to a large plug.

Drs dont seem to know what to do with fishing hooks. They seem to make a bit of a song and dance about it with scalpels and cutters and lots of needles! When possible pushing it through and cutting the hook in half seems the best bet with large hooks and the loop of line method around the bend and pulling with small hooks.
As said though it all gets a bit nasty when they go into the bone.
Fenboy, been lucky myself but seen same as you describe with the pike attached to finger via a treble situation. It must hurt but got to admit when it happened to a mate I dont know what was the most painfull, his finger or my sides from laughing!
