My local commercial is fishing well to halibut pellet paste at the moment, but as well as being attractive to the carp (and skimmers), I keep hooking rainbow trout (the place started off life as a trout fishery). The biggest I've landed so far was 4lb 8oz, but I've lost several when they've chewed through the line. The perishers are that greedy, they're bolting the paste and the line (4lb bs) is ending up surrounded by a jawful of needle-sharp teeth that makes short work of it. Short of using a wire trace (!), has anyone got any ideas (other than fish somewhere else that doesn't have rainbows)?

I would suggest your problem lies elsewhere. I don't have the problem of Rainbows biting through my line when fishing for them, their teeth are afterall not that sharp and are very small. 4lb b.s. should be man enough for the job. Does the line perhaps need replacing due to being rotten?

Just a though....Are you catching trout after trout? Of course, eventually, continuously catching them will fray the line.

I am with paul on this one. I do a little trout fishing and I have never even considered useing anything but mono for hook lengths.
Trout do have a very fast initial turn of speed. This will often find any weaknesses in a line very quickly but I am not sure that they can actually bite through mono. |

Thanks for the replies, chaps (you can tell I've very little experience with trout). The odd thing is I've been happily landing carp on the same line without any trouble. Then as soon as I hook a trout (they usually identify themselves by leaping as an initial gambit) the hook appears to have been cleanly nipped off in about 50% of cases. I'll try replacing the line and see what effect that has (or super-gluing the knot).

If the line is parting at the hook it could be the hook knot going on the initial fast run. Maybe try a different hook and knot. I must admit that when I started trout fishing I lost a few fish a second or two after hooking them at weak leader nots. Trout will sometimes take a fly and presumably a bait at speed and will find a weekness instantly so you need to be entirely confident with all knots. |
