What a year this is turning out to be.

Tropical Storm Franklin (was TD6) is now spinning around over the Bahamas and could well make a slow circle to build up some strength and then head across Florida in a few days. Too early to tell.

The only thing keeping Franklin from building as quickly as otherwise is a much larger system (tropical wave right now) that has formed southeast of Cuba that will probably organize itself in a couple more days and become tropical storm Gert and probably Hurricane Gert as it moves across the Gulf of Mexico. Right now the Caribbean tropical wave is disrupting the southwest section of Franklin.

Looks as though Franklin might just bring some rain our way Newt (my garden could really do with it!)

Meanwhile, a lot of the Sahara Desert is now heading towards the Carribean (it could get preety dusty there!), and things in the Atlantic/Mexican Gulf are generally getting quite interesting !

http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2001/ast26jun_1.htm

"The raining of dust into the Pacific Ocean may be important for the productivity of fisheries in the North Pacific, an important source of seafood for much of the world.

Photosynthetic microbes in the top layer of the ocean form the foundation of the food chain.

Often the concentration of dissolved mineral nutrients (particularly iron) controls the abundance of these microbes.

Some of the minerals in the dust might help boost microbe populations and, therefore, fish populations.

Scientists are still working to verify this effect, however."

leon we get some of that saharan dust sometimes, and my god is it a pain. it normally comes with a very light shower, sometimes of a few seconds, but the red dust is stuck to everything. it takes a pressure wash to get it off the cars, for instance, its almost like it comes mixed with superglue!!
cheers, dave. smile.gif
