I recently purchased a fox chubby shad (4 inch perch) for piking down my local canal. However it smells realy syntheticly plastic. Is this likely to put off the pike and would it be worth while doing something like soaking in tuna brine or fish sauce (only thing i can think of thats close to hand) .
Cheers.

I was playing with you Sheepy! I dont use them myself as I find them too small for my likes but plenty of others use them.

Ah, a bit slow on the uptake smile.gif My local stretch of canal doesnt hold any monsters (that im aware of) but has a good head of pike up to 11lb, well thats my best anyway biggrin.gif Its nice when I have a couple of hours free to wander up and down with the spinning rod. I prefer to stay mobile as you keep warmer and get to see more. Catching is usualy a bonus smile.gif

If you're really worried Sheepy, pop down to the tackle shop and buy some oily-fish boilie dip, and leave it to soak in that!

Don't worry sheepy he's teasing you. They do have an 'off' smell to them but they catch fish. Whether they catch pike depends on how big your local canal pike are. Strange you should mention fish sauce. If you're talking about Thai fish sauce (nam pla), my old fenland mate Andy Doughty swears by the stuff as a deadbait additive. So if the smell of raw plastic offends you then its OK to dip it in fish sauce although it'll probably wash off very quickly. Just take along a couple of chappatis to wipe your hands on afterwards smile.gif

The local pike seem on the whole to be around the 5lb mark with the biggest to date for me being 11. The smell of the lure doesnt bother me, i wondered if anyone had any views on whether it bothered the pike biggrin.gif
As for the fish sauce, i was thinking of the nam pla, i have also wondered about adding it to ground bait, especialy when after carp. Any views anyone?
