Anyone know of anywhere I can get some of these online, or indeed is there a cheap alternative to using specially made ones?

Yes drilled bullets, don't fly as far backwards but they work.

Couldnt find any on there, maybe it was just me.

I bought a few Gardner Flying Back Leads from England Angling a few weeks ago. They are very small but you do get 6 for around £4. + England Angling do free postage.

Tony - what is the difference in a flying backlead and a bullet weight? From the pictures I can find, it looks like the same item.

A lot of the flying back leads on the market do look like drilled bullets or pole fishing olivettes, but they seem to cost more !

The Gardener ones are bell shaped. You thread them on your line above your hook link, so they can run freely up and down your line.

The idea with the Gardener leads is that you have the wide flat end of the bell facing down to your hook link. As the flat surface is not very aerodynamic it will be forced back up your line when you cast out.

I am sure the same would happen with drilled bullets, but as they are more aerodynamic they may not fly so far back up your line.

Newt et al, a flying back lead is a way to get the gullible to part with their money.
Just use a drilled bullet of a suitable weight to pin down your line for a meter or so behind your rig at a fraction of the cost.
I usually use the 10-20gm sort; going as light as I can
