Now we have found various 'flavours' for our baits is it the smell or the taste that attracts?
What got me thinking was something I posted on the maggot flavour post. My Au de Cologne smells really nice but tastes like nothing known to man. Would aftershave or perfume work as a attractant? |

I read somewhere that fish can't actually smell a smell, but they can taste a flavour! Something to do with not having noses I suspect. Based on that I'd suggest that flavours are better than scents!

Well if you are using single hookbaits, a boilie for example, then it really must be either the colour or aroma as the fish hasn't had time to taste before being hooked.
Colour, now there is a topic. (yellow for me) -------------------- Eat right, stay fit, die anyway. |

I did see a programe on tv that said a carp has a sense of smell 2 million times better than a human.
Pete, are you sure fish don't have noses? What are those little knobbly bits in the nose position on some fish? Barbles on fish, could they be used for smelling? |

Hi. Aren't smell and taste very nearly the same thing? Scents, such as Eau de Cologne, are a special case and I suspect they taste horrible because they are so concentrated.
The flavour of a boilie leaks out into the water and becomes, to the fish, a taste. Regards, Pete |

Of course it could be an element of many, amino acids, various chemical signals, feed inducers etc.
