Hi,
Curious to hear if anyone has any experience of the greys missionary spinning rod ?
I am toying with getting one, (10ft version),to combine with a centrepin to do a bit of trotting.I would also like to do some spinning and general allround use. Can anyone recommend them?
Cheers
Tigger.

A 10ft spinning rod would not be the ideal rod for trotting. Have you a match rod? If so this would be a much better tool.Reason being you wouldn't get the control over the float with a spinning rod. Trotting is I believe the most enjoyable methods of fishing and to use a 'pin' is just heaven.

Great rod, albeit a tad long for my taste, for spinning. But float fishing! Not so sure.

Sounds like you really need 2 rods Tigger. Rabbit has already suggested a match rod to go with the centrepin so I,ll make a suggestion with the spinning rod.
If it's for allround use, I would get a 8 or 9 foot spinning rod. 10 foot rods are little too beefy for allround work. Perfect for Salmon, Pike, Sea-fishing etc. but not much crack for Perch/Trout/Chub fishing for instance.

PS: A 9 foot spinning rod will cope with just about anything that comes along.

this rod would be fine for pike and i assume that at 10ft it would have a reasonably large lure weight rating maybe 30-80g. there is no doubt this would surfice for some aspects of spinning or general lure fishing and if pike are the main quarry its an ok choice, however if you would like to target a variety of species with the lures like perch, zander and chub along with pike then i would recommend a shorter lighter blank and shimanos beast master range offers ideal models such as the 10-30g rod that will of course cast heavier lurse if needed, and at relatively budget prices.
as for trotting i would opt for a float rod or match rod and avoid a spinning rod for this use.

Thank`s for the replys.
Here is a link to the greys rod i was considering buying.
greys missionary spinning rod
As you can see by its write up it is stating that it is very light and strong, that is why i was asking if any of you had experience of this particular rod.
I believe i`m right in saying your better off with a longer rod to trot down large rivers but i think i will only be using it on small to medium sized rivers.Any thoughts?
Tigger.

Think we've had this conversation before. Not a great idea trying to use a spinning rod for trotting a float. Its a compromise between two techniques, neither of which is best served by a ten foot spinning rod. Trotting even small rivers is best done with a light purpose built float rod with a fast tip, minumum 12/13 feet to guide your float around obstacles and more so to pick up line and bites quickly at distance. A ten footer will inevitably be too short except for the smallest of brooks, but even if the length was right, the through action of the spinning rod will miss bites galore unless they are right under the rod tip. Spinning rods are made to hit bites that are always on a tight line, thats the nature of 99% of lure fishing..completely connected to the lure/bait and fish with no slack line....hence the through action to allow a bit of 'give' in the tackle. Trotting a float is nothing like that. You need a rod that'll pick up the slack and connect with a fish in one movement without having the luxury of time to wind in the slack line. If you are fishing a brook a couple of feet wide and you must have a ten foot rod then get yourself a ten foot match rod made for the job. From a lure fishing perspective, whilst ten footers are the weapon of choice amongst the salmon spinning fraternity, for rivers and for stillwaters, a shorter 8-9 footer is easier to handle and much more in keeping with modern lure spinning. If you must save money, buy two good used rods from ebay, loads of bargains every day.

Dont buy a single rod to do two jobs badly.
