Just wondering if anyone knows where to get hold of spinner/fly hybrids. I saw some on ebay today but can't seem to find them anywhere else online. The local tackleshop had them years ago because i remember using them to catch jack pike on the fly rod, but they no longer sell them. I'd like them for using on my UL spinning outfit when the trout are too shy for a small mepp or toby. Cheers .

Not sure what you mean by 'spinner flies' If you mean the large flies with plastic lips on the front then I have some here. They're called duck 'n dive and they came from Yorkshire Game Angling. (tel 01709854144) The lips can be bought separately.

Nope...the ones I have are like mini plugs. A lip with a fly behind. they dive very quickly.

Not quie the same thing but there are flies available with a prop blade on the front. I have a couple that I ordered from Cabella's but pretty much the same thing is marketed as something like "Thompson's Gazells" in the UK.
Another option would be the "Fly Spoons" made by Adcocks. These really drive those stillwater rainbows crazy on cold spring days when nothing else will trigger a bite. -------------------- Species caught in 2008:
Barramundi. p-i-k-e-y sea bream. Indian sea catfish. Guitarfish. Mangrove Jack. Mahseer. Squid (Not strictly a fish but it took a lure !). Emporer Sweetlip. Black Spot Snapper. Moray eel. Spangled Emperor. Bluecheek silver grunt. Yellow striped emperor. Vanikoro sweeper. Pike. Perch. Brown trout. Chub. |

Thanks for all the help guys. I'll certainly be looking into some of the suggestions .
Anyone had any experience with those light jigs from the states?. Looks like fairly good value if they'd be successful with UK species. Anyway, the search for the holy grail continues |

I've tried a few of the tiny Jigs with 1" tubes that get sold for American "panfish".
I've never caught anything on them in the UK and after nailing an 8lb Steelhead on one in the US, I gave them a fair old workout both on the river and the local pools. I'm sure that it's possible to catch fish on these things in the UK but to be honest, lifes too short. Better to clip on a spinner or a little U/L plug and get stuck into some proper fishing. I've also tried some of those balsa micro plugs that were sold by Cormeran a few years ago. They had a balsa body, plastic diving vane and were built arround a large single hook. They were a waste of time on both U/L spinning gear and the heavy fly rod. What it it that your trying to catch and what's your prefered method ? There's enough crazy experimenters on here that someone is bound to have at least considered something along similar lines. Just comming back to this post to add that whilst the little panfish outfits haven't worked for me, the little grubs and crawfish on jigs from 5g upwards can do the business and Shads fron abouth three and a half inches can work well too - the smaller ones just don't seem to get their tails going. Ken L - how were you fishing them? I generally agree with your lure suggestions but these little u/l jigs can wink out fish when more agressive lures aren't working. I keep some in the tackle box for those times.

Some thoughts on tactics although the articles are written for species you don't have. Crappie is like a perch but more shy.
