I know its legal to use double hooks for pike ,,salmon etc but what about bream tench carp and such .I dont seem to be able to find any information on this , just a thought .....ps double as in back to back one for bait one for hooking. :confused: ..rob

Rob,as far as I am aware there are no legal restrictions on the use of double or treble hooks for that matter.

It is more a case of are double/treble hooks suitable for the species you are targeting.I would have thought that if people started using either of these for non predatory fish there would soon be bans put in place by fishery owners.I see what you are saying about using double hooks ie back to back hooks one to hold the bait one to hook the fish.The problem simpley being that the more hook points the more damage caused.

Personaly Ive never liked double (back to back)hooks for anything.Always found them to be difficult to unhook.The shank being generally longer than the shank of a treble makes inverting them very difficult.

What situation did you consider using them for as there is most likely alternative presentations that people could reccomend?

i wasnt actually going to use double hooks just wondered if it was legal as i have never seen any for coarse fishing unless there used to be some years ago ....cheers rob

Although double hooks may not be banned they are definitely a bad idea due to the extra mouth damage they would cause.

What would they give you that a bait on a hair rig would not?

I have seen double hook rigs recently advocated in fishing mags, generally for bream.

When we were kids, and T.V. was black and white, and Ena Sharples was a sex goddess, we used to use twin hook bream traces on the Broads. And yer know what, they had two wire paternoster booms, just like a sea rig! And a bream bite was just like a cod bite!!

Peter, the bream rigs are two separate single hooks, aren't they, usually with different baits on both hooks? Rob was talking about a single double hook.

No, Ena was the girl, back then! Elsie came later! Yes, often caught two bream at once! My mistake on double or two singles. A two hook paternoster, a double hook rig, or it was by my misty recollection!

Your recollection is indeed misty as mud.

Martha Longhurst and Mini Cornwell were way out in front of Enna in the sex goddess stakes. Although I doubt Dennis Tanner saw them that way.

Mind you, its amazing what a few milk stouts can do for changing ones perception.
