How can I tell which way the tow is on my local stillwater or canal? It's obvious when the surface is still but not so when there is a breeze.

Make sure you sink the line and set to just trip bottom, you may find the float works against the surface flow, If you need to slow the movement increase your depth and shotting pattern.
Tight lines

After you have plumbed the depth (and you always do that, don't you ) put on a big lobworm (no shot) and set depth so it just clears the bottom. It should trot your float away with the undertow.

Now, armed with the knowledge of depth, and the direction and strength of the undertow, you are in business.

You can substitute any item that has slightly-denser-than-neutral buoyancy for the lobworm - a loaded cork for example.
