Have read a lot on here about the dangers of summer pike fishing - low water oxygen levels, frisky fish and the risk of totally exhausted pike...
Then I tune in to JW on tv last night and there he is fishing an ultra-lightweight baitcaster outfit in the height of summer,including on stillwaters, and pretty much provoking the fish to tail-walk. Also catches a double on the Stour and only then realises he's above a steep bank and deep water with no net ??? What's it all about ??? -------------------- Give it to us raw and wriggling

JW also advocated, in Angling Times recently, freelining for pike! As one wag commented in Pike & Predators, gut hooking with the experts!
But did we see the same baitcasting outfit? Ultra light? Nope, that was the ubiquitous John Wilson Six Shooter outfit!! But for summer piking similar style rods, if they are well balanced, are great fishing tools. Yes, our John is famous for appearing to induce tail-walks for the camera, grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Then we had the famous dropping a pike onto his rod and breaking it spectacle a few years ago. Probably didn't do the pike any great favours either. John and pike is not always a good mix. -------------------- PETER

Having had a six shooter outfit I could not seriously recommend it to anyone!

Dear Peter,
I had a six-shooter outfit when I was five. Matching pair in white leather holsters, nickel plated guns with white handles. Cowboy hat and sheriffs badge. Aunty bought me the leggings whilst grandma got me the fringed vest. Shot some mighty bad injun's that year. No pike though as I recall. Regards, Lee. |

Wish to keep away from the critical comments already rec.d Would howeverwish to pose the question;
Do we only fish for pike in the Winter because there is nothing else to go for.?? My experience of Winter piking is many blank days and the occasional sluggish fish. Summer piking howerver seems to result in regular catches and hard fighting fish sometimes explosive fights and tailwalking. What do you think??? -------------------- A bad days fishing is better than a good day at the office. Tight lines all.

Peterthefishermen, similar thoughts from this corner my friend! Responsible pikers are not the problem. Winter, or summer, its the brain-dead that is the killer
