Obviously sometimes you are going to have to use a variety of shot to get the presentation of the rig you are using right.What shot = what shot ?

Lets say if you have a float of 6bb what variety of shot can you use ?

Thanks biggrin.gif

if you have a tub of mixed shot, the weights should be printed on the tub, worth remembering though that most shot ratings printed on floats are wrong

Why are most of them wrong ?

Even if they are, it's still a good guideline.

There's no standard for how much each size of shot weighs. The situation is better than it was in the days of lead, but not all makers use the same scale.

I use Anchor shot and buy the 6 division dispensers. I don't use no.1 shot for float fishing and so remove these from the dispenser. Instead I buy a tub of no.9 shot. This gives me the following sizes:

SSG = 1.6 grams
AAA = 0.8 grams
BB = 0.4 grams
4 = 0.2 grams
6 = 0.1 grams
9 = 0.05 grams

Each of these (with Anchor) is then exactly half the weight of the next heavier size. I keep them in this order in the dispenser so that it's quick and easy to get at the size I want.

Jeepster's made a good point. Many floats, especially the larger ones, underestimate the amount of shot they carry.

For instance a 2 SSG waggler will often take not only this amount as locking shot around the float, but also a fair bit more as dropper shot near the hook.

In practice you may want to split up the shot into smaller units. For instance with a 1 SSG float you could use 2 AAA or 4 BB instead and so on. With the system I've described above it's very easy to work this out.

Splitting the shot like this can give you increased flexibility, and make it easy to change the shotting pattern during your session. It's rare for instance for me not to change both the position of the shot and also the depth during a session. Indeed I may change them every few casts.

Of course how much of the float tip you want above the water will vary according to the circumstances. It'll depend on factors such as the shape and thickness of the tip, the range you're fishing at, how rough the water is and, at my age, your eyesight! biggrin.gif

Interesting that. The No. 1 shot is a size I'm very confident using.

conversion tables galore here chaps,

http://home.clara.net/carl97/apcom/fishing/shot.htm

i've found it a very helpful site indeed, im glad someone mentioned about the wrong shotting being printed on the floats, got back into fishing after a long break, and i thought i was doing something wrong it appears not.

Does any one know how much weight a 'AA' (yes 'AA'!) shotting pattern is? i havent come across AA shot yet but i have seen floats marked up with this weight.

Cheers
