So who is it for you ?
Hayes, Wilson, Bailey - one of the "carpy" boys ?

Well, it certainly isn't one of the 'carpy boys'! Have you seen the new Anging Times? Upped the already overly high price to include a carp mag, or so the cover says. That feature alone made me put it back on the newstand without even looking at it! There seems to be a Mills and Boon type formula for most carp writers today!

As for Matty, great fellow, nice bloke, enjoy his TV stuff, but as a writer, no, bit shallow. Wilson, yep, has to take the lead so far. Only met the bloke a few times and really don't much like him, but for me he's a pretty good writer. Very informative, all sound stuff. His Coarse Fishing Manual is an anglers bible.

Bailey, well, as Barry Rickards has pointed out, Bailey is the most quoted angler in anti-angling literature, great accolade. Me thinks the bloke has a word processor fetish/reliance!

Well, I have mentioned the name Barry Rickards. Barry is quality. If I have a critiscism of the man it can only be that he never gets excited! The emotion of his writing runs at about the same level from start to finish! Barry's writing will, like Wilson, but unlike Hayes and Bailey, stand the test of time I'm sure.

But for me the leader of the pack has to be Fred Buller. If you haven't read his work then do, you won't regret it!

As for the weekly writers I rate Bob Nudd as one of the better ones, but then he is a son of Norfolk, and Collin Davison is always worth a read. But where has the real quality gone? Writers like Dave Phillips and John Worzencraft for example? Of course there are some good modern hacks out there, Martin Read in the Angling Star is as sharp a writer as anyone out there, as is James Holgate for Predator Publications. But is there another Bernard Venables in the making? No, I don't think so!

I'm not a great carp angler and even I enjoy Colin's writing. I agree that Ian is informative but I don't enjoy his style of writing. Colin comes over as a very nice person, someone whose company I'm sure that I would enjoy, but not so Ian. Strangely no one has mentioned the great Des Taylor, I wonder why!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I suppose it all really depends what one wants from their reading matter - do you wish to be informed; entertained; transported to another world ... all three at once?

Like all things in life, we get out what we individually want. I think all the writers mentioned have their place, depending on what we are looking for at the time
