Are freshwater eels are active or do they tend to hibernate in the winter?
I thought they hiberate through the winter months and become really active in the springtime? -------------------- Growing old is inevitable but growing up is optional

If there are any left then they do hibernate, and yes they go ballistic in the spring, mopping up far more spawn than a cormorant ever can. Even so we all love 'em to bits!

I'm no eel expert but I thought April/May was the time. In my misspent youth I used to go eel pritching right into April, but that was before global warming!!

I always found the best Eel fishing was October/November. That's in a river though, maybe cos they're on the way back to sea, to go and spawn.

Be fair, Peter - YOUR youth took place before the icecaps receded! Terry -------------------- And on the eighth day God created carp fishing...and he saw that it was pukka.

Thats unfair! Didn't hit Europe until the second great mooch. Didn't have TVs though, nor bivvies for that matter. And it was in 1947 that the indigenous Angles saw the icecaps reach their Southern-most extreme.
