Several books I have mention stockings in Southern England of Largemouth Bass, Rock Bass & Pumpkinseed but I've never come accros anything that gives further specific details. Best I've been able to determine is that Pumpkinseed definitely still exist in a few places (one near Crawley I think, and I seem to recall mention of a London park lake that had some) but I've never been able to find anything about any colonies of Largemouth or Rock Bass that still exist.

I seem to remember that beass were stocked into a private lake near Wareham in Dorset. Whether these were largemouths or smallmouths, or what happened to them I don't recall. Does anyone have any information on this water?

Steve - Hopefully they were smallmouth if the habitat was suitable (deep places and rocky). Smallmouth are much more cold tolerant than largemouth.

There used to be some in a pit "near Send" in Surrey in the 1950's. I had a pic of a mate who caught one there using an American plug, unfortunately when he died all his fishing stuff (tackle, magazines etc) was dumped by his wife.

I doubt if any of the offspring (if any) survive today.

Many thanks for the information Guys, for the record I have information that Pumpkinseed are present at Sway and the British rod Caught Record was 74.7 grammes from Highgate pond, London, 1977.

Black Bass it would appear were stocked in the USAF base at Mildenhall, but I have no current information, probably stocked opriginally in the 40's or 50's? if anyone has a copy of the Collins New Naturalist number 75 by Maitland and Cambell, Freshwater Fishes, I would be interested to find out what information is written on page 272, the page is missing from my copy?
