The Mrs thought she would cheer me up a bit and brought me the AT (After having both on order for over 20 years I recently stopped and only get them occaisionally).Flicking through I noticed Steve Broads "splicing lead core" how to feature.I didnt even read the article my eye being drawn imediately to the photo of the splice being super glued.A splice in any hollow braid works through the braided fibres contracting and gripping when placed under tension. If you apply superglue this can prevent this happenning and it will just come apart.Any one who uses splices on a regular basis knows/has learnt this surely?

Better to apply the glue under tension then? Yes, I got it this week too. Don't know why, it normally winds me up. Probably the bit about the yet another recapture of Berty the Big Bream.
Interesting bit about the 74lb carp that towed a boat! I've had ten pound pike do that!! Then another highlight from AT. And its onto my favorite subject, angling politics. Alegedly members of the Angling Unity Group (who?) have decided to form just one governing body for angling, thought we had the NAA. A group consisting of the NFA, STA, NFSA and Moran Committee, and no mention of the CA or SAA, or even worse, no mention of the POBAC. Angling Times have given this groundbreaking story only three column inches, I wonder why?! Why does AT insist on all those huge pictures? -------------------- PETER

budgie, I think you are in good company, but from a lawyers point of view, psting an item like that is not a good way to keep this site away from litigation from Emap, the very large group who own AT.
your content may well be valid but, for this sites sake, would you mind moderating the title yourself. sorry to be a pain but these things do and have blown up in the past. -------------------- phil,

I agree with you Phil. But the reality is that if it did go to court then Budgie's contention might well be upheld, to the embarrasment of AT.

Phil,I am most suprised that you feel that anything I have written could lead to legal action. After all the artical was technically incorrect and could easily be proven so,Mr Broad does work for the AT (his official position is Angling Times carp editor)and the AT printed the article.
Yes EMAP is a large organisation but surely as a lawyer you are not sugesting that the size or wealth of a party is more important than the truth in a British court of law..... If Elton or any of the moderators feel there is a need to remove this thread in case of legal action against the site (I for one would be quite prepared for it,although in all honesty dont think that a company like EMAP would be that petty) then please remove this thread.Or maybe change my initial title to the more PC "The AT and the technically incorect and potentially dangerous information written by one of its senior staff" |

fully understand budgie, but they do actually follow this site and issues have arrisen. Libel is putting in writing something that would reduce a persons standing in the eyes of third parties, effectively anyone else at emap who writes for AT could claim that this is an attack at them, because of the wording you've used, if you'd said AT and the crap article on xxxxx, and could demonstrate why it was a crap article, as you have, they would have ahad a hard case to answer.
I know I'm sad but having advised web owners in the past and counting elton as a mate, I would hope that you wouldn't mind if the title was just slackened off a bit, and it's gotta be better if you do it. [ 14. May 2004, 03:51 PM: Message edited by: phil dean ] -------------------- phil,

Thanks for your advice Phil I do apreciate it,the title has now been changed.I have spoke with Elton on this subject and the last thing I would want to do is cause him any problems as I apreciate the wonderfull service he has provided us all (and for free at that!)with this site and its forum.
I am by no means an expert on angling but do feel very strongly that a buisness that makes its money by primarily supplying information should endevour to get its information correct. Also if you put your self forward as an authority on a certain subject to.Would we be happy if a Haines manual for our car told us how to carry out a wheel change and the wheel consequently fell off due to incorrect information? Stop buying the paper if it gives incorect information or incorect reports etc? Yes obvious option BUT only if you have enough experience to recognise these faults. The real worry is the beginner who knows no better and understandably relies on information gained from such sources. Sadly this isnt the only time I have seen things like this in the angling press.I have found some publications are more prone to this than others. Over the years I have come to realise that there are some writers who fish and some fishermans who write,a marked difference if you think about it. |
