Story in a newspaper today about a politician who loves salmon fishing .. a picture shows him holding a standard-looking plug, with 2 trebles.
The tail treble is normal, but the belly treble has the points bent in almost touching the shaft.

Why not just remove it? Or would that upset the balance? Would changing the trebles for smaller ones (as I have just done on some new lures) also upset the balance of the plug? Are they that sensitive?

was it the charlie wheelan piece? did you read the whole thing, all about spey casting lessons and salmon fishing on the fly in general, not a mention of plugs, lures or spinning, just a play on words concerning his previous role as a spin doctor.
back on topic, yeah if you remove a treble from a tuned plug like a rapala, the action will change if not disappear all together.

Yeah, Charlie Wheelan. He's "eating" the plug on the front page..
Thanks for the info!

Changing the weight by removing hooks and replacing the hooks with lighter ones will change the action of a lure.

Some lures benefit from having the action changed, some won't.

Sometimes the changes drastically change the action, sometimes you hardly notice.

Broadly speaking, the more expensive lures have been fine tuned for the action that the manufacturere has deemed to be perfect.

I don't like using three sets of trebles so routinely remove one, and often change trebles that I consider too big (but be careful that to keep hooks big enough to suit the lure body, otherwise the lure will mask the hooks, and you wont get as many hookups). Fine wire hooks will often mean that a lure can be rescued from a snag, and can mean more hookups (once the fish is on the bend of the hook, that hook isn't going to straighten!)

Even flattening trebles so that the weight doesn't change, but the hook becomes ineffective, will change the action of the lure, as you will have affected the drag.

If, after changing hooks, you are not happy with the lure's action (or aren't happy anyway), try winding some soldering wire around the shank(s) of the remaining hook(s), or else get some of that lead strip that glaziers use to give windows a 'leaded light' look, and stick it to the lure's body.

As I haven't seen this picture I can't say, but are you sure that the treble isn't carrying weed guards.

Nah, the hooks are seriously bent smile.gif

As a matter of interest, has anyone out there tried home-made weed guards? I was thinking of rubber bands+superglue or something

Glenn just use sprung steel wire or in some cases you can get away with stiff nylon
