I took the day off and fished the river Waveney at Beccles (Suffolk) on Friday.

Arrived at 7.30am as I had been told it gets very busy.
By 8am there were ten other anglers between myself at the cut and the bridge.
There were four more the other side of the bridge, six fishing the cut and four more the other side of the cut.
The cut is a big mooring area cut out of the side of the river where the locals hold alot of weekend matches.

I picked the peg on the corner of the cut and river as I knew that then no other angler would be near to me to my left because of the cut or to my right as there was a boat moored there.
Two anglers appeared in a boat and fished the other side of the river opposite the other corner of the cut/river.

As I set up an old local told me he had seen a bloke in Browning colours with a white hat and mountains of gear setting up the day before.
After setting up I poured a coffee and walked the bank to get a few tips.
Four of the anglers told me Bob Nudd had fished this stretch yesterday and they had heard he struggled!

I opted to switch between a combination of grounbait and maggot feeder to start off with a single red maggot on an 18 hook.
The tide was coming in but there was alot of water coming down the river which is very strange to fish in. The anglers I spoke to said the fish will only take a static bait while this is happening.
First two casts I had wapping bites and reeled in to find no hook!

I then started to catch some small roach.
After an hour I had a few skimmers and a few more small roach.
Then a bloke turned up and said "Bob nudd fished this peg yesterday and struggled"
My confidence took a great big dent!
He said Mr Nudd had made the wrong choice by balling in a load of grounbait and fishing over the top. He said balling in does not work along this stretch of river and it generally scares the fish off.

I fished the feeder until about 1pm when the tide went slack and had a lunch break and chat with a few more of the other anglers.
All had been catching.
When the tide started to run out I fished a 3bb small bodied waggler with a few no10 shot down the line and the rest of the shot round the float.
I feed maggot, hemp and caster.
After about half an hour I started to get bites and then catch on a regular basis.
The best roach was just under a pound.
I did have a few more casts with the feeder which resulted in a perch, a gudgeon, a skimmer, a few roach and a monster great crayfish!!!!!!

I packed up at 3pm and borrowed the bloke next to me's scales. I had 15lb of roach.
The skimmers, perch and gudgeon came to 3lb 5oz

18lb 5oz in total.
Not a bad day at all.

While packing up another bloke walking past asked how I got on as Bob Nudd only managed a few fish yesterday from this peg!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now if Bob Nudd had fished the same day as me in the next peg I would have got in tangles, dropped things in the water, fallen off my box, cast all over the place with the feeder, messed up my feeding on the waggler line, spilt my coffee, etc etc due to nerves!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think he fishes around here quite a bit, i met him about 8 or 9 years ago down the beauchamp arms on the yare, my dad was the chef and i used to fish there a lot.

also red a few articles in angling times over the years where he has been fishing in norfolk.

And well done smile.gif
