Has anybody got an opinion on whether or not the lures one uses during the winter for pike/perch are they as good in the summer,or are there particular lures req for the summer?

I use the same for both. Just a bit slower and deeper in the winter. Some times it varies and you can cast 50 times in the same swim change the retrieve and you wonder where they all came from.

Might tie on a trailer hook an inch or two behind. Perch like to bump them as if to stun I think. My favorites are a gold or brass spinner and a orange and yellow spoon.

Where do you find your pictures Kendo? I see some similiarities between those two biggrin.gif

I use the same spoons and spinners all season long. I vary with plugs though. As a rule I use surface and shallow running plugs in the summer, and I use sinking and deep running plugs in the winter. But like all rules, they are there to be broken!

Generally smaller, quieter lures fished slower works best in cold weather; unless, of course, the fish happen to want big, noisy, fished fast lures that day. biggrin.gif

I like soft plastics better in winter than most other lures. I'll use them year around but most of my summer crankbaits, spinnerbaits, etc. see less time in the water winter than summer while the plastics get wet more often.

Are we talking pike here? If so, forget convention. If the water has a tinge of colour, fish HIGHER in the water, not lower. Pike look upwards. And in coloured water they see a silhoette against the light surface better than anything else.
I often fish backwaters off rivers in winter where the water is very coloured. But the pike are there and they feed to lures if you fish them very slowly above their heads.
Try something like a Rapala Magnum (floating, six inches, approx 1oz) that would, at normal retrieve, dive to six feet or more. But retrieve it more slowly so that it works no more than a couple of feet down with a slow, waggy-tailed action. Even if the water is eight feet deep you'll get hits.
Keep it slow but over their heads: that's what works for me.

In summer top water lures come over their own, weedless versions are good for working over the weed and lily beds that are not there in the winter months.

Generally a slow retrieve works best when the water is cold, a faster retrieve attracts attention in warmer weather, so there is a change to lures that work better at the speed retrieve that best suits the season.

Interestingly, my experience on this side of the Atlantic with perch and pike is the exact opposite. In cold weather I use bigger lures.

It may just be the different species we target, but I'd add that this is one of the few points on lure fishing where I disagree with Newt.

For the reason why see my article here on Angler's Net at http://anglers-net.co.uk/authors/steve05.htm Although the article refers to the size of baits I reckon the same principle applies to lures.

Much the same for me too.Deeper working lures in the Winter and more use of shallow/topwater baits in the warmer months.Same as Steve I prefer larger baits for Perch in the Winter. The ABU Atom being my favourite.Interesting point about fishing lures higher in the water when it is coloured. All round lure for both winter/summer,shallow/deep is the classic 5" copper spoon!

My local water can be gin clear in the winter. On a frosty day I have fished surface minnows and fish have come up from the bottom, 4 to 6 feet below, covered in leeches and have hit the lures with some force. I also troll many miles of river, to great effect during the winter, with the lip of a plug just tripping along the bottom. But as I said, rules are to be broken, especially in the mysterious world of lure fishing.

Logic would have it all your way Steve regardless of location. Preds should want maximum return for energy expended so a large meal rather than a smaller one if given a choice.

I think the smaller lures may be partly a product of the need here (even with pike) to go with smaller line in winter when the water is generally clearer. Not sure though and as noted elsewhere, it ain't always so. Sometimes big lures and slow works better, sometimes big and fast. However, if I don't get any action that way I start downsizing and it usually produces.
