All the swim baits can be great producers. Chubby Shad (from the pictures I can search up) looks fairly standard and should do pretty well.
This time of year I'd tend to try bouncing them along the bottom. Toss out, let settle to the bottom (your line will go slack when it gets there), gentle lift of the rod to 'hop' the lure a foot or two, let it settle again, repeat. I'd expect most takes on the fall so watch the line carefully and strike at anything unusual. -------------------- "Democracy dies when the people wanting their government to take care of them outnumber those wanting to take care of themselves." - Author Unknown - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - For a selection of lures, reels and other items, visit my eBay shop http://stores.ebay.com/JaNewt-eMart |

I caught a small jack pike on a fox chubby shad only yesterday. What you do is cast out let it sink then 'jig' it back to you in a series of short hops. It is almost like sink and draw with a dead bait. you often get takes on the drop so let it fall through the water between lifts. the takes are confident as the rubber body does not raise the suspicions of the fish. i have caught perch on them as well as pike.

The Fox chubby Shad has several advantages over similar Lead or resin head Jigs which are generally available in the UK.
The body profile is wider at the belly tapering up to the spine. This gives it a lower centre of gravity, helping to prevent it from turning over on to its back during a retrieve. This profile also allows the hook point more room, which aids hooking up. Also helping to keep more of the soft plastic body away from the teeth of a Pike. The soft plastic used in the body is softer than most, but it is a little more resilient to damage than other soft plastic lure bodies. This has helped me capture Pike in a very pressurised gravel pit. Where the Pike will eject a soft lure body on occasion. A good quality hook is used during the manufacturing of the jig head. The hook takes resharpening well, and is not blunted as easily as most hooks used on other jig heads. The tail of the body is of a large rectangular section as opposed to the normal elliptical section found on most other soft plastic lure bodies. The rectangular section displaces a lot more water, which must put out a stronger vibration, thus signalling to the predatory fish. Most of the takes, that I have received when using the Fox chubby have been ferocious. Leaving me with the impression that the Pike are actively competing for this lure. I am very conservative in my choice of commercially available soft plastic lures. The Fox Chubby meets my requirements as a general purpose all-rounder. I use Banjo Minnows for stalking individual, static, visible fish, which is where these really excel. Although you have to replace the standard hook which is crap. I find that Owner size 2 circle hooks really compliment this lure. Gitz-It baby Catfish for clear, medium to fast running water, where the Hammer Head Shark type head profile helps to keep the lure down near the bottom. A large un-weighted Orange Mag-grub, mounted on a Floteq grub screw, worked just slow enough to impart some action in the curly tail. I was introduced to this lure and method, when fishing with two notable Pike anglers on these forums. If you want heart stopping, nerve racking, ultimate high, Pike lure fishing. Then you have, just got to try this lure and method along a reed bed. -------------------- Regards from Gareth.
