Does anyone, particularly the Perch fishermen amongst you, have opinions on the Bass grip?
I picked up the Nov 04 edition of Course Angling Today and in the letters page was an article on this secure and safe method of gripping large Perch. It seems to come from Denmark.
The article and associated photo didn't really explain how to use the grip, any knowledge?
Thanks,
Comus

Do you mean this ? The Boga Grip.

If you intend to 'catch and release', then suspending any fish by its lower or upper jaw for photos or weight is not a good idea. It can't do either the fishes mouth or its suspended organs any good at all. If you are fishing for the pot and are catching bass or perhaps small/medium barracuda, wahoo, etc then its an acceptable way of controlling the front end of a mouth full of teeth, whilst lifting the fish from the water, but I really can't see the point of using them specifically on perch. There are much more fish friendly ways of handling them.

No mate,

It's actually a way of hand holding the fish through it's mouth. I will try and scan th epicture out of the mag. The fish is held one handed, through the mouth and the gills by the look of it.

OK Comus, would like to see that, although I wouldnt be happy handling any large fish supported with just one hand.

I presume you are on about the method used by US anglers to hold Black Bass and Crappie using the thumb inside the mouth?

Used it on both the afore mentioned fish and it seems ok.Not used it for our perch as I cant see why anyone would want to?

Newts the man here and If I remember correct Argyle has done some Small Mouth (?) fishing in the states.Cant see that it did any harm to the fish I caught and seemed a good way to have a secure hold on them and keep the mouth open.

Why is anyone considering these booga grip things, surely a backwards step?

Thanks Budgie,
I assume from the title, Bass Grip, that the grip origionates from the US as you say. The article in the magazine was written by a Danish chap from ddbaits. I've looked at their website (ddbaits.com) and they have some monster Perch out their and they use this grip whilst holding them. I just wondered if it was in use in the UK and what some of our Perch anglers thought of it. I had a 2.5lb Perch on Saturday and it certainly made it's frustrations at being caught felt by my hands.
