Local to me is a large Car Boot Sale at a place called Kessingland. Had some good bargains from there, paid some fair prices too! I'm one of those people who can't resist a bargain, can't resist buying something that seems better than what I have got at home already. Invariably it isn't, and sometimes its worse! Plus I have friends in the trade who look after me quite well. And then I enjoy aquiring and renovating old rods, which I never ever use and I really need the space now. But is a carboot a good place to sell a Mk IV in original condition, only 'cause I can't face renewing all that intermediate whipping!! The end result is that I have a load of surplus goodies.
In the past I've used the AN auction site but regretfully that seems to have dried up now e.bay has caught on. Okay, I could use e.bay but its just swamped and hard work to plough through all those endless pages. So tommorow sees me selling rather than buying at a car boot sale. If nothing else it will be interesting! Will it rain! I'm a born pessimist!! -------------------- PETER

QUOTE Peter Waller: Even if it might have been stolen from a fellow angler?Local to me is a large Car Boot Sale at a place called Kessingland. Had some good bargains from there, paid some fair prices too! I'm one of those people who can't resist a bargain, I was told that all the tackle that I had stolen, probably ended up in a car boot sale. If you see a Webley and Scott coarse rod, an ABU Mark V coarse rod, a B James and Son Spindrift Bass rod or a Martin James 100Plus beach rod, they might be mine. It might be worth displaying a sign assuring people that none of your wares are stolen. Fellow anglers might be more encouraged to buy!! -------------------- Gabriel Finance Ltd. I don't believe you will get anywhere near the true value of an item at a car boot sale, especially for something that may have some sort of "added value" merely for being what it is.

My vote would be for an Auction. I visit these regularly and although I consider that I buy "bargains", I believe it's a fair price. Don't go for a general type of auction, aim at the antique type.
There are always a fair few tackle buyers there, in the hope of spotting something rare. most of these auctions will send out fliers to people who have been there before and they will mention that tackle will be on offer. That usually brings out a few anglers. I only bid for unusual, querky items, or vintage tackle that is in a usable condition, EVEN IF IT'S A CANE MKIV WHICH NEEDS RE-WHIPPING!!! As I said, I consider I'm paying a fair price, which is usually much higher that car boot prices. I do have the added comfort though, that it's very unlikely to have been nicked. Top money items are: Hardy, pretty much anything, but reels are good as long as they are VGC. Farlows, must be in good nick. Early brass reels, but DON'T polish them if you buy them and don't buy them polished if can avoid it. Lures, paint must be good, or must be very rare. Bargains, but good items to look out for, are reels marked as coming from the "Army and Navy". I don't really know why, but these always seem to go cheap, ofetn, they were made by top companies such as Hardy, but were badged A&N to be sold through their mail order catalogues to Ex-patriots abroad. There's some lovely stuff about, going cheap, but will be worth a lot in the future. Although these auctions are mostly about antiques, they will take newer gear and you could do very well. -------------------- Dunk Fairley

Am I right in thinking that genuine Mk IVs didn't have any intermediate whipping?

At the Bridgnorth (Shropshire) fishing tackle auctions I attended in the middle 1990's, original cane Mark IV's usually sold for £100 - £150 depending on condition.
