Hey everybody, i've got a very light hearted match comin up on April 24th. My neighbour has hired our a local lake for the day to host this match and i really could do with some help because i really want to out do him!! The lake is 'BREAHAWAYS' in "MELTON, SUFFOLK". I've fished there a couple times before but i'm not a serious angler and never took it seriously. Anyways, what i'd really like is for anybody to tell me what sort of depths and baits i should be fishing at this sort of time of year. Anyone who has previous experience of this lake, any tips would be greatly received. Its the match lake at Melton btw and not the specimen lake. I hear its full of lots of smaller fish (5lb+ but no bigger than 20). Thanks guys

Only just seen this post!!!!!!!!

Breakaway pits Melton AAAAAAAAAAArrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First advice get a rod licence if you dont have one.
Breakaways is the EA's favorite spot in Suffolk.
The water has anglers on there 24 hours, 7 days a week all year long unless it freezes.
The bottom is made up of groudbait pellets and boilies!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As you can see, I dont like the place.
I think you will find Elton is not very keen either!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I would not feel very safe there as it is a very easy target for tackle theives.

But I can help you.

You need TWO keepnets, one for carp and one for silvers.
The best peg is the one near the toilets / ticket machine which is right next to the SMALL area of the puddle that you are not allowed to fish in.
Its called the fish safety area of something!!!!!!

The fish do tend to follow the wind but most anglers favour a feeder approach to the middle of the water with pellets and corn being the main baits.
This method produces carp tench and bream.
(I have watched a match start there and saw 30+ anglers cast feeders into an area of approx 30 square meters!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

I would also feed a float line with pellets and maggots as the water has a big head of silver fish and plenty of matches have been won this way.
Its also worth feeding a line in the margins as the carp will come close in at some stage of the day.
Continued feeding of a waggler/pole line will lead to the fish coming up in the water.

A deadly method in the match lake that one of my local club members (lucky bugger lives next to club waters car park) and his mate use there is a pva bag with a specimen carp style rig cast out about two rod lengths.

I think there is usually a match there every Sunday and I would go down and get some info in the weeks leading up to the match.
Also ring Breakaways tackle in Ipswich or Stuart traps and clays (something like that) in Melton for info.
